The author and the text:

 

Edward James Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was a noted English poet, and had been the Poet Laureate of Great Britain from 1984 till his death. His famous works include Birthday Letters, The Hawk in the Rain and Tales from Ovid.

The poem describes the magical experience of a young child in an oakwood, and indicates that human beings and trees should thrive as a single family. It focuses strongly on the need to protect our natural environment for the welfare of mankind.  

 

এডওয়ার্ড জেমস টেড হিউজেস (১৯৩০-১৯৯৮) একজন প্রখ্যাত ইংরেজী কবি ছিলেন এবং তিনি ১৯৮৪ সাল থেকে মৃত্যুর পূর্ব পর্যন্ত গ্রেট ব্রিটেনের কবি বিজয়ী ছিলেন। তাঁর বিখ্যাত রচনাগুলির মধ্যে বার্থডে লেটের্স, দ্য হক ইন দ্য রেইন এবং টেলস অফ ওভিড অন্তর্ভুক্ত রয়েছে।

কবিতাটিতে একটি ওক গাছের বনে একটি ছোট শিশুর যাদুবিদ্যার অভিজ্ঞতা বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে, এবং ইঙ্গিত দেয় যে মানুষেরা এবং গাছগুলি একক পরিবার হিসাবে উন্নতিলাভ করে। এটি মানব জাতীর কল্যাণে আমাদের প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশ রক্ষার প্রয়োজনের প্রতি দৃঢ়ভাবে আলোকপাত করে।

** সারসংক্ষেপ :

একবার কবি আস্তে আস্তে একটি বনের মাধ্যে একটি পুরুষ হরিণ এর  

জন্য সন্ধান করছিলেন। কিন্তু তিনি সেখানে এক বৃদ্ধ মহিলার সাথে 

সাক্ষাত করলেন যিনি কবিকে বলেছিলেন যে তিনি তাঁর ব্যাগের 

ভিতরে তার (কবির)গোপন রহস্য রেখেছেন। বৃদ্ধা যখন তার 

ছোট্ট ব্যাগটি খুললেন, তখন কবি দু'বার জাগ্রত হয়ে বুঝতে 

পেরেছিলেন যে তিনি ওক গাছের উপজাতি দ্বারা বেষ্টিত এবং তিনি 

নিজে একটি খুঁটির সাথে বাঁধা। আশ্চর্যের বিষয়, উপজাতিটি কবিকে 

তাদের পরিচয় দিয়েছিল এবং বলেছিল যে তারা তার নিজের সত্য 

পরিবার। ওক গাছগুলি কবিকে আরও বলেছিল যে যখনই ওক 

গাছটি পড়ে যাবে বা তাদের কেটে ফেলা হবে, তাকে দুটি ওক গাছ 

লাগানোর প্রতিশ্রুতি দেওয়া উচিত। এবং কবি যদি প্রতিশ্রুতি দিতে 

ব্যর্থ হন, তবে কালো ওকের ছালটি তার উপর কুঁচকে যাবে এবং 

তারপরে সে মারা যাবে। এটা বুঝতে পারা যায় যে কবি ওক গাছ 

উপজাতির কাছে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন। এগুলি ছিল কবির একটি 

স্বপ্ন, যা তাকে বদলে দেয়। পরিণতিটিতে, তিনি যখন ওক গাছের 

বন থেকে বেরিয়ে এসে মানব সভ্যতার মাধ্যে ফিরে এসেছিলেন,

The Text

Once I crept in an oakwood I was looking for a stag.

একবার আমি একটি ওকগাছের বনের মধ্যে দিয়ে ধীরে ধীরে হাঁটছিলাম- আমি একটি পুরুষ হরিণ খুঁজছিলাম।

 

I met an old woman there-all knobbly stick and rag.

আমার সেখানে এক বৃদ্ধ মহিলার সাথে দেখা হয়েছিল-তার কাছে শুধুমাত্র ছিল গাঁটযুক্ত লাঠি এবং ছিন্ন বস্ত্র।

 

She said: 'I have your secret here inside my little bag.

তিনি বলেছিলেন: 'আমার ছোট্ট ব্যাগের ভিতরেই আমি আপনার গোপনীয়তা এখানে রেখেছি।

 

Then she began to cackle and I began to quake.

তারপর তিনি কর্কশ স্বরে কথা বলতে লাগলেন এবং আমি কাঁপতে লাগলাম।

 

She opened up her little bag and I came twice awake

তিনি তার ছোট ব্যাগটি খুললেন এবং আমি দু'বার সজাগ হলাম

 

Surrounded by a staring tribe and me tied to a stake.

They said: 'We are the oak-trees and your own true family.

We are chopped down, we are torn up, you do not blink an eye.

'Whenever you see an oak-tree felled, swear now you will plant two.

This was my dream beneath the boughs, the dream that altered me.

When I came out of the oakwood, back to human company,

My walk was the walk of a human child, but my heart was a tree.

Ans: The dream which the poet saw beneath the boughs altered the poet.
