The poet and the text:

Philip Arthur Larkin (1922 – 1985) was a renowned English poet and novelist. His first book of poetry was The North Ship, followed by two novels, Jill and A Girl in Winter. He came to prominence in 1955 with the publication of his second collection of poems, The Less Deceived, followed by The Whitsun Weddings and High Windows. He was offered the position of Poet Laureate in 1984 but he declined it.

This poem describes the journey of three ships that head to different destinations. While two ships return, one presses forward and faces perils to continue its long onward journey, almost like a symbol of aspiration that overcomes all obstacles.

 

ফিলিপ আর্থার লারকিন (১৯২২-১৯৮৫) একজন প্রখ্যাত ইংরেজী কবি ও ঔপন্যাসিক ছিলেন। তাঁর প্রথম কাব্যগ্রন্থটি ছিল দ্য নর্থ শিপ, তারপরে দুটি উপন্যাস জিল এবং এ গার্ল ইন উইণ্টার। ১৯৫৫ সালে তিনি তাঁর দ্বিতীয় কাব্যগ্রন্থ 'দ্য লাস্ট ডিসেভেড' প্রকাশের মাধ্যমে সর্বাধিক পরিচিতি লাভ করেন, তারপরে দ্য হুইটসন ওয়েডিংস এবং হাই উইন্ডোজ। ১৯৮৪ সালে তাঁকে কবি বিজয়ীর(Poet Laureate) পদ দেওয়া হয়েছিল কিন্তু তিনি তা প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছিলেন।

এই কবিতাটিতে তিনটি জাহাজের ভ্রমণকে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে যেগুলি বিভিন্ন গন্তব্যস্থলে যায়। যখন দুটি জাহাজ ফিরে আসে, একটি প্রচণ্ডবেগে সামনের দিকে এগিয়ে যায় এবং বিপদের মুখোমুখি হয় দীর্ঘতর সম্মুখযাত্রা চালিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য, প্রায় আকাঙ্ক্ষার প্রতীক হিসাবে যা সমস্ত বাধা অতিক্রম করে।

The Text:

 

I saw three ships go sailing by,

আমি দেখলাম তিনটি জাহাজ চলাচল করছে,

 

Over the sea, the lifting sea,

সমুদ্রের ওপার দিয়ে, উত্তোলক সমুদ্র

 

And the wind rose in the morning sky,

এবং বাতাস বইল সকাজের আকাশে,

 

And one was rigged for a long journey.

আর একজনকে দীর্ঘ যাত্রার জন্য কার্যোপয়োগী করা হয়েছিল।

 

The first ship turned towards the west,

প্রথম জাহাজটি পশ্চিম দিকে ঘুরল,

 

Over the sea, the running sea,

সমুদ্রের উপর দিয়ে, চলমান সমুদ্র,

 

And by the wind was all possessed

এবং বাতাসের অধিকারে সমস্ত ছিল

 

And carried to a rich country.

এবং একটি সমৃদ্ধ দেশে নিয়ে যায়।

 

The second turned towards the east,

Over the sea, the quaking sea,

The third ship drove toward the north,

তৃতীয় জাহাজটি উত্তর দিকে চলে গেল,

 

Over the sea, the darkening sea,

সমুদ্রের উপর দিয়ে, কালো সমুদ্রে,

 

But no breath of wind came forth,
