Voice Change

1. Watch him as the shades of evening fall.

= He was watched as the shades of evening fall.

 

2. You can see cat as he really is.

= Cat can be seen by you as he really is.

 

3. Most people think that the cat is an unintelligent animal.

= It is thought by most people that the cat is an unintelligent animal.

 

4. He sometimes watches the mouse hole for an hour or two.

= The mouse hole is watched by him sometimes for an hour or two.

 

5. He would have to learn a new geography.

= A new geography would have to be learnt by him.

 

6. He sorts out a peace of fish from his plate and hands it down.

= A peace of fish is sorted out from his plate and it is handed down by him.

 

7. He puts up his claw.

= His claw is put up by him.

 

8. The cat struck his claw into me.

= The cat’s claw was struck into me by him.

 

9. The guest strokes the cat.

= The cat is stroked by the guest.

 

10. The cat gingerly receives it.

= It is received gingerly by the cat.

 


11. He stretches himself.

= He is stretched by himself.

 

12. The cat arches his back.

= The cat’s back is arched by the cat.

 

13. The family has finished tea.

= Tea has been finished by the family.

 

14. He will give them the privilege of boarding.

= They will be given the privilege of boarding by him.

 

Narration Change

 

 

1. The host says, “He wants you to give something to eat.”

= The host says that he wants you to give something to eat.

 

2.“Ow!” says the guest, “The cat struck his claws into me!”

= The guest exclaimed in pain that the cat struck his claws into him.

 

3. The cat says to the guest, “Another time my friend, you won’t be slow to understand.”

= The cat tells the guest, addressing him as a friend that it may be in another time and he also says that he won’t be slow to understand.

 

Do as Directed

 

1. The cat is an unintelligent animal. (Complex/ Negative)

= The cat is an animal that is not intelligent.

 

2. The cat sometimes watches the mouse hole for an hour or two. His object is to pass the time. (Simple)

= The cat sometimes watches the mouse hole for an hour or two to pass the time.



3. Cat is an unintelligent animal. Most people think this. (Complex)

= Most people think that cat is an unintelligent animal.

 

4. The family sits down to the tea. The cat puts in an appearance to get his share. (Complex)

= When the family sits down to the tea, the cat puts in an appearance to get his share.

 

5. The guest is likely to have the best. (Complex)

= The guest is likely that he has to have the best. 

 

6. The cat puts in an appearance to get his share. (Use the verb form of 'appearance')

= The cat appears to get his share.

 

7. He puts up his claws and quietly but firmly rakes the guest. (Simple)

= Though he puts up his claws and quietly, firmly rakes the guest.

 

8. There may be a guest at the table. The cat is particularly civil to him. (Complex)

= Though there may be a guest at the table, the cat is particularly civil to him.

 

9. He sorts out a piece of fish from his plate and hands it down. (Simple)

= Sorting out a piece of fish from his plate he hands it down. 

 

10. He wants you to give something to eat. (Complex)

= He wants you to give something that you can eat. 

 


11. He pours as he retires to a safe distance from guest's foot before eating the food. (Split into two simple sentences)

(i) He pours before eating the food.

(ii) He retires to a safe distance from guest's foot. 

 

12. The guest would like to do something. He dares not to do that. (Complex)

= Though the guest would like to do something, he dares not to do that.

 

13. The cat is particularly civil to the guest. The guest is likely to have the best. (Complex)

= Though the cat is particularly civil to the guest, the guest is likely to have the best.

 

14. The guest does not give him something to eat. He stoops down and strokes the cat. (Simple)

= Stooping down and stroking the cat the guest does not give him something to eat.

 

15. He trots across and skips to the roof of an empty shed. (Simple)

= Trotting across he skips to the roof of an empty shed. 

 

16. They grow old. Then they go in for sport to the suburban backyard. (Complex)

= When they grow old, they go in for sport to the suburban backyard.

 

17. The cat casually goes out for the room. (Use adjective form of 'casually')

= The cat goes out for the room in a casual way.

 

18. These backyards are dull to us. These are to them hunting grounds. (Complex)

= These backyards that are dull to us are hunting grounds to them.

 


19. The cat does not like to leave his country. All his friends live there. (Simple/ Complex)

= The cat does not like to leave his and his friends' country. (Simple)

= The cat does not like to leave his country where his friends live. (Complex)

 

20. He looks keenly from side to side and moves noiselessly. (Simple)

= Looking keenly from side to side he moves noiselessly.

 

21. The cat will stay at the old house and attach himself to the new tenants. (Simple)

= Attaching himself to the new tenants the cat will stay at the old house.

 

22. An hour ago they were mewing for fish and milk. They are no longer the meek creatures. (Complex)

= An hour ago they were no longer the meek creatures who were mewing for fish and milk.
