(a) What was written upon the stone on which the sword was fixed?

Ans.> Whoever pulls out this sword is by right of birth, the king of England.

 

(b) What happened on the bright May morning?

Ans.> Arthur, slender and young, lifted the sword easily.

 


(c) Why did Arthur need a new sword?

Ans.> King Arthur had lost his royal sword in a battle.

 

 

Activity 6

 

Write 'T' for true and 'F' for false statements in the given boxes. Give supporting statements for each of your answers:

 

(a) The people of England were unhappy during Arthur's rule. F

S.S> King Arthur could gift peace and prosperity to England.

 

(b) Merlin took King Arthur to the gilded pavilion on his birthday. F

S.S> On the wedding day, Merlin took him to a richly gilded pavilion, painted crimson and dark blue.

 

(c) Fifty people could sit at the Round Table. T

S.S> In the middle of the room was a huge, round, oak table, richly carved, capable of seating fifty people.

Activity 7

 

Answer the following questions:

 

(a) Who, according to Merlin, could possess the Excalibur?

Ans.> Only an honest and fearless knight who protects the common people can possess the Excalibur.

 

(b) Describe the pavilion where the round table was placed.

Ans.> The pavilion was richly gilded, and painted with crimson and dark blue colour. The floor was marbled. In the middle of the room, there was a huge, round, oak table, richly carved, capable of seating fifty people.

 

(c) What did King Arthur's devoted knights promise?

Ans.> These knights promised that they would help the helpless, be gentle to the weak and to punish the wicked.

 

(d) Why did King Arthur smile when he was informed that the Excalibur was taken back into the lake by a beautiful arm?

Ans.> King Arthur realized that he had completed his task and his kingdom did not need the Excalibur or him anymore in the future. So he smiled.

 

 

 

Activity 8(a)

 

In the following sentences underline the groups of words that do the work of an Adjective:

 

(i) The king is wearing a crown which is made of gold.

 


(ii) He walked on the path that was stony.

 

(iii) He has a friend who is very helpful.

 

The groups of words that you have underlined do the work of an Adjective and contain Subjects and Predicates of their own. Such a group of words is called an Adjective Clause.

An Adjective Clause is introduced by a Relative Pronoun and so it is called a Relative Clause.

তোমরা শব্দের যে গোষ্ঠীগুলিকে নিম্নরেখাঙ্কিত করেছ সেগুলি একটি বিশেষণ এর কাজ করে এবং এতে উদ্দেশ্য এবং তাদের নিজস্ব বিধেয় থাকে। এই জাতীয় শব্দের একটি গ্রুপকে Adjective Clause বলা হয় ।

একটি Adjective Clause একটি Relativ Pronoun দ্বারা প্রবর্তন করা হয় এবং তাই এটিকে Relative Clause বলা হয়।


Activity 8(b)

 

In the following sentences, underline the groups of words that do the work of an Adverb:

 

(i) He returned home when it was raining.

 

(ii) The knight fought in a manner which was brave.

 

(iii)The student could not understand the lesson as he was not present in the class.

 


The groups of words that you have underlined do the work of an Adverb and contain Subjects and Predicates of their own. Such a group of words is called an Adverb Clause.

তোমরা শব্দের যে গোষ্ঠীগুলিকে নিম্নরেখাঙ্কিত করেছসেগুলি একটি Adverbএর কাজ করে এবং এতে উদ্দেশ্য এবং তাদের নিজস্ব বিধেয় থাকে। এই জাতীয় শব্দের একটি গ্রুপকে Adverb Clause বলা হয়।

In the following sentences, underline the groups of words that do the work of a Noun:

 

(i) I expect that he will come.

 

(ii) That you behave like this, hurts me.

 

(iii) Mother was very happy that her child had succeeded.

 

The groups of words that you have underlined do the work of a Noun and contain Subjects and Predicates of their own. Such a group of words is called a Noun Clause.

তোমরা শব্দের যে গোষ্ঠীগুলিকে নিম্নরেখাঙ্কিত করেছসেগুলি একটি Noun এর কাজ করে এবং এতে উদ্দেশ্য এবং তাদের নিজস্ব বিধেয় থাকে। এই জাতীয় শব্দের একটি গ্রুপকে Noun Clause বলা হয়।

Underline the Clauses in the following sentences and state what kind of clauses they are:

 

(i) He was a man whom everyone admired.

=> Adjective or Relative Clause

 

(ii) I hope that my uncle will visit me.

=> Noun Clause

 

(iii) He could not walk further as he was tired.

=> Adverb Clause

 

(iv) They live in a place where it is always cold.

=> Adverb Clause

 

(v) My friends took me to a garden which was very beautiful.

=> Adjective or Relative Clause

 

(vi) The artist hoped that he would win an award.

=> Noun Clause
