About the Writer and Story ::
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a Russian writer of worldwide fame. His novels are marked by sharp psychological insights and graphic description of reality. His most noted works are war and peace (1809), Sebastopol Sketches (1855), Anna Karenina (1877).
Through the tale of a Tsar who wanted to know the nature of appropriate counsel and action, Tolstoy reveals an illuminating notion about the duties of man. This simple tale is loaded with deep thoughts on the way human beings should conduct their actions.

কাউন্ট লেভ নিকোলাইভিচ টলস্টয় (১৮২৮-১৯১০) ছিলেন বিশ্বব্যাপী খ্যাতি সম্পন্ন একজন রাশিয়ান লেখক। তার উপন্যাসগুলি তীক্ষ্ণ মনস্তাত্ত্বিক অন্তর্দৃষ্টি এবং বাস্তবতার রৈখিক বর্ণনা দ্বারা চিহ্নিত। তাঁর সবচেয়ে উল্লেখযোগ্য কাজ হচ্ছে যুদ্ধ ও শান্তি (১৮০৯), সেবাস্টোপল স্কেচেস (১৮৫৫), আনা কারেনিনা (১৮৭৭)।
একজন জারের গল্পের মাধ্যমে যিনি উপযুক্ত পরামর্শ এবং কর্মের প্রকৃতি জানতে চেয়েছিলেন, টলস্টয় মানুষের কর্তব্য সম্পর্কে একটি আলোকিত ধারণা প্রকাশ করেছেন। এই সহজ কাহিনীটি মানুষের চিন্তাভাবনাগুলি কিভাবে তার কর্ম দ্বারা পরিচালনা করা উচিত তা নিয়ে গভীর চিন্তায় পূর্ণ।
THE TEXT (Page No. 56) ::
“Thanks!" said the hermit, and, giving the spade to the Tsar, he sat down on the ground.
"ধন্যবাদ!" সন্ন্যাসী বললেন, এবং, জারকে কোদালটি দিয়ে, তিনি মাটিতে বসে পড়লেন।
When he had dug two beds, the Tsar stopped and repeated his questions.
যখন তিনি দুটি বিছানা(জমি বা জমির খণ্ড) খনন করেছিলেন, তখন জার থামলেন এবং তার প্রশ্নগুলি পুনরাবৃত্তি করলেন।
The hermit again gave no answer, but rose, stretched out his hand for the spade, and said: “Now rest awhile-and let me work a bit."
সন্ন্যাসী আবার কোন উত্তর দিলেন না, কিন্তু উঠে দাঁড়ালেন, কোদালের জন্য হাত বাড়ালেন এবং বলনলেন, "এখন একটু বিশ্রাম করুন-আর আমাকে একটু কাজ করতে দিন।"
But the Tsar did not give him the spade, and continued to dig.
কিন্তু জার তাকে কোদালটি দিলেন না, এবং খনন অব্যাহত রেখেছিলেন(চালিয়ে গেলেন)।
One hour passed, and another.
এক ঘন্টা পেরিয়ে গেল, এবং আরও একটা ঘণ্টা।
The sun began to sink behind the trees, and the Tsar at last stuck the spade into the ground, and said: “I came to you, wise man, for an answer to my questions.
সূর্য গাছের আড়ালে ডুবে যেতে শুরু করল, এবং জার অবশেষে কোদালটি মাটিতে আটকে(পুঁতে) দিলেন এবং বললেন: "আমি আপনার কাছে এসেছি, জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তি, আমার প্রশ্নের উত্তরের জন্য।
If you can give me none, tell me so, and I will return home.”
যদি আপনি আমাকে কিছু দিতে না পারেন, আমাকে তা বলুন, এবং আমি বাড়ি ফিরব।
“Here comes someone running,” said the hermit, “let us see who it is."
"এখানে কেউ ছুটে আসছে," সন্ন্যাসী বললেন, "আসুন দেখি ও কে।"
The Tsar turned round, and saw a bearded man come running out of the wood.
জার ঘুরলেন ,এবং দেখলেন একজন দাড়িওয়ালা লোক বন থেকে ছুটে বেরিয়ে আসছেন।
The man held his hands pressed against his stomach, and blood was flowing from under them.
লোকটি তার পেটে হাত দিয়ে চেপে ধরেছিলেন, এবং তাদের নীচে থেকে রক্ত প্রবাহিত হচ্ছিল।
When he reached the Tsar, he fell fainting on the ground moaning feebly.

The Tsar and the hermit unfastened the man's clothing.

The Tsar washed it as best he could, and bandaged it with his handkerchief and with a towel the hermit had.
জার সেটাকে যতটা ভালোভাবে পারলেন ধুয়ে পরিষ্কার করে দিলেন, এবং তার রুমাল এবং সন্ন্যাসীর কাছে যে তোয়ালে ছিল তা দিয়ে এটিকে ব্যান্ডেজ করে দিলেন।
But the blood would not stop flowing, and the Tsar again and again removed the bandage soaked with warm blood, and washed and rebandaged the wound.

When at last the blood ceased flowing, the man revived and asked for something to drink.

The Tsar brought fresh water and gave it to him.

Meanwhile, the sun had set, and it had become cool.

So the Tsar, with the hermit's help, carried the wounded man into the hut and laid him on the bed.
তাই জার, সন্ন্যাসীর সাহায্যে, আহত ব্যক্তিকে কুঁড়েঘরে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন এবং বিছানায় শুইয়ে দিয়েছিলেন।
Lying on the bed the man closed his eyes and was quiet; but the Tsar was so tired with his walk and with the work he had done, that he crouched down on the threshold, and also fell asleep-so soundly that he slept all through the short summer night.
বিছানায় শুয়ে লোকটি চোখ বন্ধ করে ছিলেন এবং চুপ করে ছিলেন; কিন্তু জার তার হাঁটাহাঁটি এবং যে কাজগুলি তিনি করেছিলেন তাতে এত ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়েছিলেন যে, তিনি দোরগোড়ায় গুটিসুটি মেরে শুয়ে পড়লেন, এবং ঘুমিয়েও পড়েছিলেন-এতটা গভীরভাবে যে তিনি গ্রীষ্মের সংক্ষিপ্ত সারারাত ধরে ঘুমিয়েছিলেন।
When he awoke in the morning, it was long before he could remember where he was, or who was the strange bearded man lying on the bed and gazing intently at him with shining eyes.
যখন তিনি সকালে ঘুম থেকে উঠেছিলেন, তখন অনেকক্ষণ পর্যন্ত তিনি মনে করতে পারলেন না যে তিনি কোথায় ছিলেন, অথবা বিছানায় শুয়ে থাকা অপরিচিত দাড়িওয়ালা লোকটি কে ছিলেন এবং উজ্জ্বল চোখে তার দিকে একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়েছিলেন।
“Forgive me!" said the bearded man in a weak voice, when he saw that the Tsar was awake and was looking at him.
"আমাকে ক্ষমা করুন!" দাড়িওয়ালা লোকটি দুর্বল কণ্ঠে বললেন, যখন তিনি দেখলেন যে জার জেগে আছেন এবং তার দিকে তাকিয়ে আছেন।
"I do not know you, and have nothing to forgive you for," said the Tsar.

"You do not know me, but I know you.

I am that enemy of yours who swore to revenge himself on you, because you executed his brother and seized his property.
