About the Writer and Story ::
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a Russian writer of worldwide fame. His novels are marked by sharp psychological insights and graphic description of reality. His most noted works are war and peace (1809), Sebastopol Sketches (1855), Anna Karenina (1877).
Through the tale of a Tsar who wanted to know the nature of appropriate counsel and action, Tolstoy reveals an illuminating notion about the duties of man. This simple tale is loaded with deep thoughts on the way human beings should conduct their actions.

THE TEXT (Page No. 57) ::
I knew you had gone alone to see the hermit, and I resolved to kill you on your way back.
আমি জানতাম আপনি সন্ন্যাসীর সঙ্গে দেখা করতে একা গিয়েছেন, এবং আমি সংকল্প করেছিলাম তোমার ফেরার পথে আপনাকে হত্যা করার ।
But the day passed and you did not return.
কিন্তু গোটা দিন চলে গেল এবং আপনি আর ফিরে আসলেন না।
So I came out from my ambush to find you, and I came upon your bodyguard, and they recognised me, and wounded me.

The Tsar was very glad to have made peace with his enemy so easily, and have gained him for a friend, and he not only forgave him, but said he would send his servants and his own physician to attend him, and promised to restore his property.

Having taken leave of the wounded man, the Tsar went out into the porch and looked around for the hermit.

Before going away he wished once more to beg an answer to the questions he had put.

The hermit was outside, on his knees, sowing seeds in the beds that had been dug the day before.
সন্ন্যাসী বাইরে ছিলেন, তার হাঁটুর উপর বসে(হাঁটু গেড়ে বসে), জমিতে বীজ বপন করছিলেন যা আগের দিন খনন(তৈরি) করা হয়েছিল।
The Tsar approached him, and said: “For the last time, I pray you to answer my questions, wise man."
জার তাঁর কাছে গেলেন এবং বললেন, "শেষবারের মতো, আমি প্রার্থনা করছি, আমার প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিন, জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তি।"
"You have already been answered!" said the hermit, still crouching on his thin legs, and looking up at the Tsar, who stood before him.
"আপনি ইতিমধ্যেই উত্তর পেয়ে গেছেন!" বললেন সন্ন্যাসী, তখনও তার পাতলা(শীর্ণ) পায়ের উপর জড়িয়ে, এবং জারের দিকে তাকিয়ে যিনি তার সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিলেন।
“How answered? What do you mean?" asked the Tsar.
"কিভাবে উত্তর দিলেন? আপনি কি বলতে চাইছেন? " জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন জার।
“Do you not see," replied the hermit.
“আপনি কি দেখতে পাচ্ছেন না,” জবাব দিলেন সাধু।
“If you had not pitied my weakness yesterday, and had not dug those beds for me, but had gone your way, that man would have attacked you, and you would have repented of not having stayed with me.
"যদি আপনি গতকাল আমার দুর্বলতার জন্য করুণা না করতেন, এবং আমার জন্য সেই জমিগুলি খনন(তৈরি) না করে দিতেন, কিন্তু নিজের রাস্তায় হাঁটা দিতেন, তাহলে সেই ব্যক্তি আপনাকে আক্রমণ করত, এবং আপনি আমার সাথে না থেকে যাওয়ার জন্য অনুতপ্ত হতেন।
So the most important time was when you were digging the beds; and I was the most important man; and to do me good was your most important business.
তাই সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় ছিল যখন আপনি জমিগুলি খনন(তৈরি) করছিলেন; এবং আমি ছিলাম সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মানুষ; এবং আমাকে ভাল করাটাই ছিল আপনার সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ।
Afterwards when that man ran to us, the most important time was when you were attending to him, for if you had not bound up his wounds he would have died without having made peace with you.
পরে যখন সেই লোকটি আমাদের কাছে দৌড়ে এল, তখন সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় ছিল যখন আপনি তার সেবা(পরিচর্যা) করছিলেন, কারণ আপনি যদি তার ক্ষতটা বেঁধে না দিতেন তাহলে তিনি আপনার সাথে শান্তি স্থাপন না করেই মারা যেতেন।
So he was the most important man, and what you did for him was your most important business.
সুতরাং তিনিই ছিলেন সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মানুষ, এবং আপনি তার জন্য যা করেছেন তা আপনার সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ ছিল।
Remember then there is only one time that is important-Now!
তাহলে মনে রাখবেন কেবল মাত্র একটি সময়ই আছে যা সব থেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তা হল-এখন(বর্তমান)!
It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power.
এটিই সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় কারণ এটিই একমাত্র সময় যখন আমাদের কিছু ক্ষমতা থাকে।
The most necessary man is he with whom you are, for no man knows whether he will ever have dealings with anyone else: and the most important affair is, to do him good, because for that purpose alone was man sent into this life!"
সবচেয়ে প্রয়োজনীয় মানুষ হল সে, যার সাথে আপনি বর্তমান আছেন, কারণ কোন মানুষই জানে না যে সে অন্য কারো সাথে কখনো লেনদেন করবে কিনা: এবং সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যাপার হল, তার ভালো করা, কারণ এই উদ্দেশ্যেই একমাত্র মানুষকে এই জীবনে পাঠানো হয়েছিল!"
