The author and the text:
Nayantara Sehgal (Born in 1927) is one of the first female Indian writers in English to receive wide recognition. Her fiction deals with India's response to the crisis brought about by political changes. She won the Sahitya Academy award in 1986 for her novel Rich like Us.
The text, an extract from Nayantara Sehgal's memoir
Prison and Chocolate cake, recounts the incidents following the death of
Gandhiji. It vividly describes not only the author's personal sense of loss,
but also the collective grief of the entire nation at the passing away of
Mahatma Gandhi.
নয়নতারা শেগল (জন্ম ১৯২৭) ইংরেজিতে প্রথম ভারতীয় লেখক যিনি বিস্তৃত স্বীকৃতি অর্জন করেছেন। তাঁর কথাসাহিত্য রাজনৈতিক পরিবর্তন নিয়ে আসা সংকট সম্পর্কে ভারতের প্রতিক্রিয়া নিয়ে কাজ করে। তিনি রিচ লাইক আস উপন্যাসের জন্য ১৯৮৬ সালে সাহিত্য একাডেমি পুরস্কার জয় করেছিলেন।

গান্ধীর মৃত্যুতে সমগ্র জাতির সম্মিলিত শোককেও স্পষ্টভাবে বর্ণনা করে।
Unit - 1
I was having tea at home on the evening of 30th January 1948, when I was called to Birla house by an urgent telephone.
১৯৮৮ সালের ৩০ শে জানুয়ারি সন্ধ্যায় আমি বাড়িতে চা খাচ্ছিলাম, যখন জরুরি
টেলিফোনে আমাকে বিরলা হাউসে
আনা হয়েছিল।
Gandhiji had been shot on his way to a prayer meeting.
প্রার্থনা সভা করতে যাওয়ার পথে গান্ধীজি গুলিবিদ্ধ হন।
I was numb with shock as I got into the car.
গাড়িতে উঠতেই আমি হতবাক হয়ে গেলাম।
At the Birla House, Gandhiji's relatives and followers had gathered round his body.
বিড়লা হাউসে গান্ধীজির আত্মীয়স্বজন এবং অনুসারীরা তাঁর দেহটির চারদিকে জড়ো
হয়েছিলেন।
There was silence in the room as Gandhiji breathed his last.
গান্ধীজী শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করার সাথে সাথে ঘরে নীরবতা
বিরাজ করছিল।
Words of Bapuji's death had spread through Delhi like a flame fanned by wind.
বাতাস যেমন আগুনের উত্তেজনা কে বাড়িয়ে দেয় তেমনি বাপুজির মৃত্যুর খবর শিখার মতো সমস্ত দিল্লিতে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল।

Sad groups of men and women had collected around Birla House.
বিরলা হাউজটির আশেপাশে দু:খিত পুরুষ ও মহিলা এর দল একত্র
হয়েছিলেন।
Out of every window, one could see a brown blur of faces.
প্রতিটি জানালার বাইরে কোনো একজন মুখের বাদামী ঝাপসা
চেহারা দেখতে পেত।
They did not make a sound.
তারা কোনও শব্দ করল না।
There was an unnatural silence.
একটা অপ্রাকৃত নীরবতা ছিল।
It was as if time stood still for those few minutes.
যেন সময়টি কয়েক মিনিটের জন্য দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল।
The people were too stunned to speak in the beginning.
শুরুতে লোকেরা কথা বলতে খুব হতবাক হয়েছিল।
Later they clamoured wildly, shouting and crying.
পরে তারা বন্যভাবে গোলমাল করছিল, চিৎকার
করছিল ও কাঁদছিল।
They jostled one another in a stampede to break into the house.
তারা আতঙ্কে দিশাহারা অবস্থায় একজন আরেকজনের সঙ্গে ধাক্কাধাক্কী করছিল ঘরের মধ্যে জোর করে প্রবেশ করার জন্য।
They calmed a little when it was announced that they would be allowed to see Gandhiji before the funeral.
তারা যখন কিছুটা শান্ত হয়েছিল তখন জানানো হয়েছিল যে অন্ত্যেষ্টিক্রিয়ার আগে
গান্ধীজিকে দেখার অনুমতি দেওয়া হবে।
When one is faced with the shock of a loved one's death, one whimpers: "What will become of me now that he has left me?"
যখন একজন প্রিয়জনের মৃত্যুর শোকের মুখোমুখি হয়, তখন বিলাপ করিয়া কাঁদিয়া
বলেন "তিনি আমাকে ছেড়ে চলে গেছেন, এখন
আমার কী হবে?"
This was surely the question uppermost in the mind of the mourning people.
এটি অবশ্যই শোকগ্রস্থ মানুষের মনে সবচেয়ে বড় প্রশ্ন ছিল।
They looked like lost children.
তাদেরকে হারিয়ে যাওয়া শিশুর মতো লাগছিল।
It was the question in many of our hearts as we sat, still shocked and unbelieving.
এটি আমাদের অনেকের মনেই প্রশ্ন ছিল যখন আমরা বসে ছিলাম, তখনও হতবাক এবং সংশয়ী ভাবে।
We listened to the broadcast telling the people of India that their Bapu was no more.
আমরা
