The Passing Away of Bapu
The author and the text:
Nayantara Sehgal (Born in 1927) is one of the first female Indian writers in English to receive wide recognition. Her fiction deals with India's response to the crisis brought about by political changes. She won the Sahitya Academy award in 1986 for her novel Rich like Us.
The text, an extract from
Nayantara Sehgal's memoir Prison and Chocolate cake, recounts the incidents
following the death of Gandhiji. It vividly describes not only the author's
personal sense of loss, but also the collective grief of the entire nation at
the passing away of Mahatma Gandhi.
নয়নতারা শেগল (জন্ম ১৯২৭) ইংরেজিতে প্রথম ভারতীয় লেখক যিনি বিস্তৃত স্বীকৃতি অর্জন করেছেন। তাঁর কথাসাহিত্য রাজনৈতিক পরিবর্তন নিয়ে আসা সংকট সম্পর্কে ভারতের প্রতিক্রিয়া নিয়ে কাজ করে। তিনি রিচ লাইক আস উপন্যাসের জন্য ১৯৮৬ সালে সাহিত্য একাডেমি পুরস্কার জয় করেছিলেন।
নয়নতারা সেহগালের স্মৃতিকথা প্রিজন এবং চকোলেট কেকের একটি অংশে লেখাটিতে গান্ধীজির মৃত্যুর পরের ঘটনাগুলির কথা বলা হয়েছে। এটি কেবল লেখকের ব্যক্তিগত ক্ষয়ক্ষতিই নয়, মহাত্মা গান্ধীর মৃত্যুতে সমগ্র জাতির সম্মিলিত শোককেও স্পষ্টভাবে বর্ণনা করে।

Some days after the funeral, a special train took
Gandhiji's ashes to Allahabad.
অন্ত্যেষ্টিক্রিয়ার কিছু দিন পরে, একটি বিশেষ ট্রেন গান্ধীজির ছাই
নিয়ে এলাহাবাদে নিয়ে যাওয়া হল।
The compartment was decked with flowers.
বগি ফুল দিয়ে সজ্জিত ছিল।
People on the train sang bhajans.
ট্রেনে চলা লোকেরা ভজন গাইল।
People did not weep anymore for they could feel
Gandhiji's presence amid the flowers and the songs.
ফুল আর গানের মাঝে গান্ধিজির উপস্থিতির পরিচয় পাওয়ায় লোকেরা আর কান্নাকাটি করল না।
At every station sorrowful crowds filled the
platform.
প্রতিটি স্টেশনে দু:খিত জনতা প্ল্যাটফর্মটি পূর্ণ করে রেখেছিল।
Amid song and prayer the train reached Allahabad.
গান ও প্রার্থনার মাঝে ট্রেনটি এলাহাবাদে পৌঁছেছিল।
The ashes were immersed in the Ganges where a huge
crowd had gathered at the bank.
ছাইগুলি গঙ্গায় নিমজ্জিত করা হয়েছিল যেখানে নদীর তীরে প্রচুর ভিড় জমা
হয়েছিল।
Afterwards we all went back to Delhi.
এরপরে আমরা সকলেই দিল্লিতে ফিরে গেলাম।

Back in Delhi, I felt at sea.

I had not directly walked with Gandhiji, gone to
prison at his call or made any sacrifice for my country.

My sisters and I, and other young people like me,
had been merely onlookers.

But still I felt at sea.

With Bapu's passing away, I felt the magic circle

With an effort I roused myself.

How could I so easily lose courage when he was no
longer there?

My values were not so weak.
আমার মান এতটা দুর্বল ছিল না।
Millions of people would have been ordinary folk
but for Bapu.
লক্ষ লক্ষ মানুষ সাধারণ লোক হলেও কিন্তূ বাপু।
He brought them out of indifference and awakened
them to one another's suffering.
তিনি তাদের উদাসীনতা থেকে বাইরে এনেছিলেন এবং একে অপরের কষ্টে তাদের জাগিয়ে

We were still there, young, strong and proud to
bear his banner before us.
আমরা এখনও সেখানে ছিলাম, তরুণ, শক্তিশালী এবং গর্বিত, আমাদের সামনে তাঁর নিশান নিয়ে চলার জন্য ।
Bapu had passed away but his India would continue
to live in his children.
বাপু মারা গেছেন কিন্তূ তাঁর ভারত তাঁর সন্তানদের মধ্যেই বেঁচে থাকবে।
