About the Poet and Poem ::
Gieve Patel (1940-) is a renowned Indian poet playwright and painter. In his poetry, Patel uses a syncopated rhythm. He brings the flavour of every day's speech in his poetry. Some of his notable works are Mirrored, Mirroring (1991), How do you withstand, body (1976).
The poem is about the harm done to the environment by human beings. In a voice of sarcasm and irony, the poet speaks of man's violence and impatience towards nature. The poem is written in free verse.

গিভ প্যাটেল (১৯৪০-) একজন প্রখ্যাত ভারতীয় কবি নাট্যকার ও চিত্রশিল্পী। তাঁর কবিতায় প্যাটেল একটি সিনকোপেটেড(এক ধরনের বিশেষ ছন্দ) ছন্দ ব্যবহার করেছেন। তিনি তাঁর কবিতায় প্রতিদিনের বক্তৃতার গন্ধ নিয়ে আসেন। তাঁর কয়েকটি উল্লেখযোগ্য রচনাগুলি হল Mirrored, Mirroring (1991), How do you withstand, body (1976).
কবিতাটি মানুষের দ্বারা পরিবেশের যে ক্ষতি হয়েছে তা সম্পর্কে। তীব্র বক্রোক্তি ও বিদ্রূপের কণ্ঠে কবি মানুষের সহিংসতা এবং প্রকৃতির প্রতি অধৈর্য্যের কথা বলেছেন। কবিতাটি মুক্ত ছন্দে লেখা হয়েছে।
SUMMARY (সারসংক্ষেপ) ::
The present poem posits a scathing attack upon the human action of reckless cutting down of trees. The poem is a lyric where Patel raises an angry voice against deforestation. The poet considers the cutting down of a tree to be a violent ritual. He looks upon the felling of a tree as a murder. It is a murder which is heinous in the slow drawing out of the action. The poet casts a pathetic glance at the growing up of a tree by deriving nourishment from the land and the sky. The poet thinks that human beings harbour an intense dislike for a full-grown tree. Therefore, a tree is cut in a cruel process that reflects the merciless mood of the cutter. The poet says, destruction of the tree is not complete by the mere felling of it. The tree is removed from its place of birth by vengefully uprooting it and leaving the stump to wither.
সারসংক্ষেপ ::
বর্তমান কবিতাটিতে বেপরোয়া ভাবে গাছ কেটে ফেলার মানবিক ক্রিয়াকলাপের উপর এক ভয়াবহ আক্রমণ করা হয়েছে। কবিতাটি এমন একটি গীতিকবিতা যেখানে প্যাটেল বনাঞ্চল ধংসের বিরুদ্ধে ক্রুদ্ধ কণ্ঠস্বর উত্থাপন করেছেন। কবি গাছ কাটাকে হিংসাত্মক আচরণবিধি বলে মনে করেন। তিনি একটি গাছ কেটে ফেলাকে হত্যা হিসাবে গণ্য করেন। এটি একটি হত্যাকাণ্ড যে জঘন্য ক্রিয়াকলাপটি ধীরে ধীরে সংগঠিত হয়। ভূমি ও আকাশ থেকে পুষ্টি অর্জন করে গাছের বেড়ে ওঠার দিকে কবি এক করুণ দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করেছেন। কবি মনে করেন যে মানুষ একটি পূর্ণ বয়স্ক গাছের প্রতি তীব্র অপছন্দ পোষণ করে। অতএব, একটি গাছ নিষ্ঠুর প্রক্রিয়াতে কাটা হয় যা যে ব্যক্তি কাটে তার নির্দয় মনের ভাবকে প্রতিফলিত করে। কবি বলেছেন, একটি গাছকে শুধুমাত্র কেটে ফেললেই তার ধংস সম্পূর্ণ হয় না। গাছটি তার জন্মস্থান থেকে প্রতিহিংসামূলকভাবে উপড়ে ফেলে এবং কাণ্ডটি শুকিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য ফেলে রাখতে হব়ে।
THE TEXT ::
It takes much time to kill a tree,
একটি গাছ হত্যা করতে অনেক সময় লাগে,
Not a simple jab of the knife
ছুরির কোনও সাধারণ কাজ নয়
Will do it. It has grown
এটা করবো. এটা বেড়েছে
Slowly consuming the earth,
আস্তে আস্তে খাদ্য গ্রহন করে মাটি থেকে,
Rising out of it, feeding
তা থেকে উত্থিত হয়, প্রতিপালন করে
Upon its crust, absorbing
তার ভূত্বক এর উপর, শোষণ করে
Years of sunlight, air, water,
বহু বছর ধরে সূর্যের আলো, বায়ু, জল,
And out of its leprous hide
এবং এর কুষ্ঠব্যাধিগ্রস্ত চামড়ার আড়াল থেকে
Sprouting leaves.
পাতাগুলি বাইরে বেরিয়ে আসবে(গজাবে)।
So hack and chop .
সুতরাং কুপিয়ে এবং কুচি কুচি করে কাটতে হবে।
But this alone won't do it.
তবে একা এটি করতে পারবে না।
Not so much pain will do it
খুব বেশি ব্যথা এটা দিতে পারবে না
The bleeding bark will heal
রক্তাক্ত ছাল সুস্থ হয়ে যাবে

And the strength of the tree exposed,
