Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:
We would find a hammer for him, and then he would have lost sight of the mark he had made on the wall, where the nail was to go in. Each of us had to get up on the chair beside him, and see if we could find it. We would each discover it in a new place, and he would call us all fools.
Trying to reach a point three inches beyond what was possible for him to reach, the string would slip, and down he would slide on to the piano.
ACTIVITY 1
Rearrange the following sentences:

Answer the following questions:
(a) Why was it necessary for each of them to get up on the chair beside him?
Ans.> They all tried to find out the lost mark made by Uncle Podger on the wall.
(b) Why did Uncle consider each of them to be fools?
Ans.> Because they did not find out the lost mark made by Uncle Podger on the wall.
(c) How did Uncle Podger fall on the piano?
Ans.> When Uncle Podger tried to reach a point three inches beyond, the string would slip, and down he would slide on to the piano.
ACTIVITY 3
Underline the nominal compounds in the following sentences:
(a) Since it is raining, you should wear the raincoat.
(b) Do you know how to use the washing machine?
(c) Never waste drinking water.
(d) There is not a single oil pump in our area.
Activity 4
Write the summary of the given passage:
The constable came. He took me by the hand and pushed me out. My luggage was also taken out. I refused to go to the other compartment and the train steamed away. I went and sat in the waiting room, keeping my hand- bag with me, leaving the other luggage where it was. The railway authorities had taken charge of it.
Ans.> A constable came and pushed me out with my luggage. I did not want to go to another compartment. He made me sit in the waiting room. I was handed over to railway authorities.
