SECTION A: READING COMPREHENSION

 1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below: 

We would find a hammer for him, and then he would have lost sight of the mark he had made on the wall, where the nail was to go in. Each of us had to get up on the chair beside him, and see if we could find it. We would each discover it in a new place, and he would call us all fools.

Trying to reach a point three inches beyond what was possible for him to reach, the string would slip, and down he would slide on to the piano.

 

A. Rearrange the following sentences:         1 × 5 = 5 

(i) Each of us would discover a new place. (iv)

(ii) The hammer was found. (i)  

(iii) He fell on to the piano. (v)

(iv) Everyone has to get up on the chair beside him. (iii)

(v) Uncle Podger would lose sight of the mark. (ii)

 

B.Answer the following questions:         2 × 3 = 6 

(a) Why was it necessary for each of them to get up on the chair beside him?

Ans.> They all tried to fin out the lost sight of the mark on the wall.


(b) Why did Uncle consider each of them to be fools?

Ans.> They all discovered the lost spot in a new place, and so Uncle would call us all fools.

(c) How did Uncle Podger fall on the piano?

Ans.> when Uncle Podger tried to reach a  point three inches beyond, the string would slip, and down he would slide onto the piano.

   

2. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: 

You know of course that our earth is very, very old millions and millions of years old. And for a long long time there were no men or women living in it, before the men came there were only animals, and before the animals there was a time when no kind of life existed on the earth. It is difficult to imagine this world of ours which is so full today of all kinds of animals and men, to be without them. But scientists and those who have studied and thought a great a deal about these matters tell us that there was a time when the earth was too hot for any living being to live on it.

 

Answer the following questions in complete sentences:

(i) How old is the earth?

Ans.>  our earth is very, very old millions and millions of years old.

(ii) Describe the earth before man existed.

Ans.> Before the men came on the earth there were only animals, and before the animals there was a time when no kind of life existed on the earth.

(iii) Why was there no life on earth?

Ans.>The earth was too hot for any living being to live on it.

Ans.> Elizabeth I is one of the most powerful queens.

(iii) No other girl of our school is so pretty as Tania. (Use Comparative degree)

Ans.> Tania is prettier than any other girls of our school.

(iv) His application was rejected. (Replace the underlined word with its antonym)

Ans.> His application was accepted.

(v) Don't eat the rotten apples. (Identify the participial adjective)

Ans.> Don't eat the rotten apples.

6. Match column A with column B:  1 × 6 = 6

SECTION C: WRITING 

7. Suppose your cousin has never been to your village. Write a letter (in about 70 words) to him/her describing your village and inviting him/her to visit your village.                 7 

Ans.> 

Dear cousin, 

How are you? I wish all of you are doing well. I am going to write something about our village and invite you to visit our village. You have never visited our village. you will enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of our village. There are vast paddy fields. You can see many kinds of animals. There is a river where you can swim. I am sure it will be very enjoyable for you.

No more today. I am waiting for you. come soon.

8. Write the summary of the given passage:                7 

The constable came. He took me by the hand and pushed me out. My luggage was also taken out. I refused to go to the other compartment and the train steamed away. I went and sat in the waiting room, keeping my hand-bag with me, leaving the other luggage where it was. The railway authorities had taken charge of it. 

Ans.>

The constable pushed me out of the compartment with my luggage. I denied to go to the other compartment and sat in the waiting room with my handbag. The railway authorities charged of it.
