I was at the top of the class. I knew that I had a sharp brain. Other kids of the class are jealous of me. Last week Jerome beat me. I became sad.

Ans.> A boy named Jerome Dadian got one hundred out of one hundred for Maths. The narrator was not at all pleased. He suspected that it was happening because Jerome Dadian had eaten certain ice cream.

Write 'T' for true and 'F' for false in the given boxes. Give supporting statements for each of your answers:

(a) Mr. Peppi sold ice creams of only one flavour. [F]

SS:> “He had every flavour there is.”

(b) The ice cream man was very unkind. [F]

SS:> “He was too soft-hearted.”

 

(c) The purple ice cream had no effect on the boy. [F]

SS:> “He gave a purple ice cream to a boy with pimples, and his pimples were cured!”

 

(d) The speaker believed that there was no other boy smarter than him in school. [T]

SS:> “I was the smartest kid in school and that’s the way I wanted it to stay.”

 Ans.> Mr. Peppi sold ice creams of different types and flavours.

(b) How did the speaker know that Mr. Peppi was a soft-hearted person?

Ans.> Mr. Peppi gave ice creams to the poor kids free of cost. He felt sorry for the poor people. 


(c) What was special about the green ice cream?

Ans.> The green ice cream grew smaller the long nose of kids. 

 

(d) Why did the speaker want to do better than everyone else in the class?

Ans.> He was the smartest kid in school.

Ans.> Inside Mr. Peppi’s ice cream van, the speaker found many different flavours of tubs of ice creams.

(b) What secret about Dadian did the speaker come to know?

Ans.> Dadian had been eating the smart ice cream; that's how he got one hundred marks in Maths.

 

(c) Rewrite the last paragraph in normal English with correct spellings.

Ans.> “It is the next day now. Something is happening to me. I don’t feel quite as smart. I have been trying to do a real hard sum. It is one and one. What does one and one make? Is it three or is it four?”

(d) Why do you think there are peculiar spellings in the last paragraph? Give reasons for your answer.

Ans.> The writer wants to convey the message to the readers that  “Smart Ice Cream”, had done some silly mistakes after being smart. 

 

Activity 8(a)

Now underline in the following sentences the words which connect the sentences to the previous ones:

(i) I put some sand that I carried with me into every bin in the van, except for the smart ice cream. Next, I looked at the smart ice cream.

 

(ii) Dadian had been eating smart ice cream; that’s how he got one hundred for Maths. Thereafter, I decided to finish off the matter.

a hare boasts how he can run fast -- teases tortoise for his slow speed -- both run a race -- hare sees tortoise far behind -- falls asleep midway -- wakes up to see tortoise much ahead -- hare's last leap too late -- tortoise beats him

A Hare and a Tortoise

A hare boasts that he can run fast. He teases tortoise for his slow speed. The tortoise takes it very badly. So, they decide to organized a race competition. During the race the hare sees the tortoise far behind. He falls asleep midway. But the tortoise steadily. When the hare wakes up, he sees the tortoise much ahead of him. The hare's last leap was too late. The tortoise beats him at last.
