There was once a lad who wanted to be a sailor but his mother would not let him go to the sea. "Child, what do you know of sailing?" she would say. "You're a farmer's son, you know the turn of the seasons and the smell of the soil but you do not know the sea."

Now the boy whose name was Jon, had always obeyed his mother. So he went about his farm work with a heavy heart but did not again mention the sea.    

 

A. Answer the following questions :

(i) What did the lad want to be ?

Ans.> The lad wanted to be a sailor.

 

(ii) What did his mother tell him ?

Ans.> As a farmer’s son he knows the turn of the seasons and the smell of the soil but he does not know the sea.

The shoe-maker was a good man, but was very poor. One day he had just one piece of leather left. He could make only one pair of shoes with it. He had no money to buy any more. He cut out the leather. Then he went to bed. In the morning he got up from his bed. He saw that the leather had been made into shoes. He had no servants. Who had done the work? The shoes were very well-made. A man came in and bought the shoes. He paid a good price for them. The shoe-maker bought leather for four pair of shoes with that money.

A. Answer the following questions :

(i) What sort of a man was the shoe-maker?

Ans.> The shoe-maker was a good man but he was very poor.

 

(ii) What did the shoe-maker do with his one piece of leather ?

Ans.> The shoe-maker made only one pair of shoes with it.

 

(iii) Why did the shoes fetch a good price?

Ans.> The shoes were very well-made.
