One day a little boy visited Mahatma Gandhi.
একদিন একটি ছোট ছেলে মহাত্মা গান্ধীকে দেখতে গেল।
Gandhiji's dress surprised the boy.
গান্ধীজির পোশাক ছেলেটিকে অবাক করে দিয়েছিল।
"Such a great man without a shirt!" he wondered.
"জামা ছাড়াই এমন একজন মহান মানুষ!" সে বিস্মিত হয়েছিল।
Why don't you wear a shirt, Gandhiji?" the little boy asked.
আপনি জামা পরেন না কেন, গান্ধীজী ?" ছোট ছেলেটি জিজ্ঞেস করল।
"Where is the money, son?" Gandhiji asked gently. "I am very poor. I cannot buy a shirt.”
"টাকা কই, বাছা?" গান্ধীজি আস্তে করে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন। "আমি খুব গরীব। আমি একটি জামা কিনতে পারি না।"
The boy felt pity.
ছেলেটির করুণা হল।
"My mother sews well," he said. "She makes all my clothes. I will ask her to sew a shirt for you.”
"আমার মা ভালো সেলাই করেন" সে বলল। "তিনি আমার সব জামাকাপড় তৈরি করে। আমি তাঁকে আপনার জন্য একটি র্জামা সেলাই করতে বলব।"
"How many shirts can your mother make?" Gandhiji asked.
"তোমার মা কয়টা জামা বানাতে পারে?" গান্ধীজি জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।
"Just tell me how many you need", said the boy. "She will make as many as you want."
"শুধু আমাকে বল আপনার কয়টা লাগবে", বলল ছেলেটা। "তিনি ততগুলি তৈরি করবেন যতগুলি আপনি চান।"
Gandhiji thought for a moment.
গান্ধীজি কিছুক্ষণ ভাবলেন।
Then he said, "I have a very large family, son. I have forty crore brothers and sisters.”
তারপর বললেন, "আমার অনেক বড় পরিবার, বাছা। আমার চল্লিশ কোটি ভাই-বোন আছে।"
"Till every one of them has a shirt, how can I wear one?" Gandhiji asked.
"যতক্ষণ না তাদের প্রত্যেকের একটি জামা থাকে, আমি কিভাবে একটি পরতে পারি?" গান্ধীজি জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।
The reply surprised the boy. Forty crore brothers and sisters!
উত্তরটি ছেলেটিকে অবাক করে দিয়েছিল। চল্লিশ কোটি ভাই-বোন!
Gandhiji was right. After all, Gandhiji felt all the people of India were his family members.
গান্ধীজি ঠিকই বলেছিলেন। সর্বোপরি, গান্ধীজি ভারতের সমস্ত মানুষক তাঁর পরিবারের সদস্য বলে মনে করতেন।

ভারতের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের জন্য তহবিল সংগ্রহের জন্য গান্ধীজি বিভিন্ন স্থান ভ্রমণ করেছিলেন।
Once he visited Odisha.
একবার তিনি ওড়িশায় গিয়েছিলেন।
There he met an old woman.
সেখানে তিনি এক বৃদ্ধা মহিলার সাথে দেখা করেন।
She could not stand straight.
তিনি সোজা হয়ে দাঁড়াতে পারছিলেন না।
Her hair was grey.
তার চুল ছিল ধূসর।
Her sari was torn.
তার শাড়ি ছিল ছেঁড়া।
She went near Gandhiji and touched his feet.
তিনি গান্ধীজির কাছে গিয়ে তাঁর পা স্পর্শ করলেন।
Then she gave him a coin.
তারপর তিনি তাঁকে একটি মুদ্রা দিলেন।
Jamanlal Bajaj's duty was to keep the funds.
জামনলাল বাজাজের দায়িত্ব ছিল তহবিল রাখা।
He asked Gandhiji for the coin, but Gandhiji refused.
তিনি গান্ধীজির কাছে মুদ্রাটি চেয়েছিলেন, কিন্তু গান্ধীজি তা দিতে অস্বীকার করেন।
Jamanlal was surprised.
জামনলাল অবাক হইয়েছিলেন।
"I keep thousands of rupees," Jamanlal said.
জামনলাল বললেন, আমি হাজার হাজার টাকা রাখি।
“This coin is worth much more than those thousands,” Gandhiji told him.
গান্ধীজি তাকে বলেছিলেন, "এই মুদ্রার মূল্য সেই হাজার হাজারের চেয়ে অনেক বেশি।"
