Problems of Drinking Water
Water is a vital natural resource. It sustains all life forms on the Earth. Abundant in its use. We use it for drinking, cooking, bathing, and cleaning. Surprisingly enough, only 0.1% of the earth's total water is portable. But random water pollution and abuse of water result in a water crisis. The crisis may be averted if nature is allowed to recycle water freely. But pollution makes her task harder. As a result, the underground water level recedes fast. Taps and tube wells run dry in hot summer days. People in arid areas suffer the ‘starvation’ of water. They are to drink the filthy water of ponds, stagnant tanks, and rivers. Consequently, they fall victims to deadly diseases. However, some well-measured steps like rainwater harvesting, the proper use of water, and population control should be taken to tackle the problem.

জল একটি অত্যাবশ্যক প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদ। এটি পৃথিবীতে সমস্ত জীবনের গঠন বজায় রাখে। এর ব্যবহার প্রচুর। আমরা এটি পানীয়, রান্না, স্নান এবং পরিষ্কারের জন্য ব্যবহার করি। যথেষ্টই আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে, পৃথিবীর মোট জলের মাত্র 0.1 শতাংশ পানযোগ্য। কিন্তু যথেচ্ছভাবে জল দূষণ এবং জলের অপব্যবহারের ফলে জলের সংকট দেখা দেয়। প্রকৃতিকে অবাধে জলের পুনর্ব্যবহার করতে দিলে এ সংকট এড়ানো সম্ভব। কিন্তু দূষণ তার কাজকে কঠিন করে তোলে। ফলে ভূগর্ভস্থ জলের স্তর দ্রুত নিচে নেমে যাচ্ছে। গ্রীষ্মের গরমের দিনে কল ও নলকূপ শুকিয়ে যায়। শুষ্ক এলাকার মানুষ জলের ‘অনাহারে’ ভোগেে। তাদের পুকুর, জলাশয় এবং নদীর নোংরা জল পান করতে হয়। ফল স্বরুপ, তারা মারাত্মক রোগের শিকার হয়। যাইহোক, সমস্যাটি মোকাবেলায় বৃষ্টির জল সংগ্রহ, জলের সঠিক ব্যবহার এবং জনসংখ্যা নিয়ন্ত্রণের মতো কিছু ভাল পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া উচিত।
