Khushwant Singh
Khushwant Singh (1915-2014) has won fame as a journalist as well as a fiction writer. With Malice towards One and All was a very popular weekly newspaper column penned by him. He was editor to the prominent newsweekly known as The Illustrated Weekly. Khushwant Singh is also well known for his poems and short stories.
'Karma' is taken from The Collected Short Stories of Khushwant Singh (2005). The story is written with a note of irony. The author shows concern with the issue of cultural identity.
খুশবন্ত সিং (১৯১৫-২০১৪) একজন সাংবাদিক এবং কথাসাহিত্যিক হিসাবে খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছেন। ‘With Malice towards One and All’ তাঁর দ্বারা লিখিত একটি খুব জনপ্রিয় সাপ্তাহিক সংবাদপত্রের কলাম ছিল। তিনি ‘The Illustrated Weekly’ নামে পরিচিত বিশিষ্ট সাপ্তাহিক সংবাদপত্রের সম্পাদক ছিলেন। খুশবন্ত সিং তাঁর কবিতা এবং ছোট গল্পের জন্যও সুপরিচিত।
‘Karma' খুশবন্ত সিংয়ের সংক্ষিপ্ত গল্পের সংগ্রহ (২০০৫) থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। গল্পটি বিদ্রূপের একটি সুর দিয়ে লেখা হয়েছে। লেখক সাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয়ের বিষয়টি নিয়ে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছেন।

Outside the waiting room, Sir Mohan Lal's luggage lay piled along the wall.
ওয়েটিং রুমের বাইরে স্যার মোহনলালের লাগেজ প্রাচীর বরাবর গাদা দিয়ে পড়েছিল।
On a small grey steel trunk, Lachmi, Lady Mohan Lal, sat chewing a betel leaf and fanning herself with a newspaper.
ছোট ধূসর স্টিলের ট্রাঙ্কে, লছমি, শ্রীমতী মোহন লাল, বসে বসে একটি পান পাতা চর্বণ করছিলেন এবং একটি সংবাদপত্র দিয়ে নিজেকে হাওয়া করছিলেন।
She was short and fat and in her middle forties.

The coolie flattened his turban to make a cushion, hoisted the steel trunk on his head, and moved down the platform.
কুলি গদি তৈরির জন্য তার পাগড়িটি চ্যাপ্টা করলেন, স্টিলের ট্রাঙ্কটি তার মাথায় উত্তোলন করলেন, এবং প্ল্যাটফর্মের নিচে চলে গেলেন।
Lady Lal picked up her brass tiffin-carrier and ambled along behind him.
শ্রীমতী লাল তার পিতলের টিফিন-ক্যারিয়ার তুললেন এবং তার(কুলি) পিছনে পিছনে ছুটে গেলেন।
On the way she stopped by a hawker's stall to replenish her silver betel leaf case, and then joined the coolie.
পথে তিনি তার রূপালী পানের বাটা-টি(পান রাখার পাত্র)আবার ভরে নেওয়ার জন্য একজন ফেরিওয়ালার স্টলে থামলেন এবং পরে কুলির সঙ্গে যোগ দিলেন।
She sat down on her steel trunk (which the coolie had put down) and started talking to him.

“Are the trains very crowded on these lines?"

Lady Lal opened the brass carrier and took out a bundle of cramped chapattis and some mango pickle.
শ্রীমতী লাল পিতলের বাহকটি(পাত্র টি) খুললেন এবং ভেতরে আবদ্ধ এক গুচ্ছ চাপাতি(রুটি) এবং আমের আচার বের করলেন।
While she ate, the coolie sat opposite her on his haunches, drawing lines in the gravel with his finger.
তিনি যখন খাচ্ছিলেন, কুলিটি তার নিতম্ব-এর বিপরীতে বসেছিলেন, তার আঙুল দিয়ে নুড়িপাথর-এর মধ্যেই রেখাগুলি আঁকছিলেন।
"Are you travelling alone, sister?"

“No, I am with my master, brother. He is in the waiting room. He travels first class. He is a vizier and a barrister, and meets so many officers and Englishmen in the trains-and I am only a native woman. I can't understand English and don't know their ways, so I keep to my zenana inter-class.”
