About the Writer and Story ::
Khushwant Singh (1915-2014) has won fame as a journalist as well as a fiction writer. With Malice towards One and All was a very popular weekly newspaper column penned by him. He was editor to the prominent newsweekly known as The Illustrated Weekly. Khushwant Singh is also well known for his poems and short stories.
'Karma' is taken from The Collected Short Stories of Khushwant Singh (2005). The story is written with a note of irony. The author shows concern with the issue of cultural identity.

খুশবন্ত সিং (১৯১৫-২০১৪) একজন সাংবাদিক এবং কথাসাহিত্যিক হিসাবে খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছেন। ‘With Malice towards One and All’ তাঁর দ্বারা লিখিত একটি খুব জনপ্রিয় সাপ্তাহিক সংবাদপত্রের কলাম ছিল। তিনি ‘The Illustrated Weekly’ নামে পরিচিত বিশিষ্ট সাপ্তাহিক সংবাদপত্রের সম্পাদক ছিলেন। খুশবন্ত সিং তাঁর কবিতা এবং ছোট গল্পের জন্যও সুপরিচিত।
‘Karma' খুশবন্ত সিং-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত গল্পের সংগ্রহ (২০০৫) থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। গল্পটি বিদ্রূপের একটি সুর দিয়ে লেখা হয়েছে। লেখক সাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয়ের বিষয়টি নিয়ে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছেন।

"Get the nigger out,” he muttered to his companion.
"নিগ্রো(অ-সাদা ব্যক্তিকে অপমানজনক ডাক) ব্যক্তিটিকে(স্যার মোহনলাল) বের করে দাও," তিনি(সৈন্যদের একজন) তার সঙ্গীর সাথে বিড়বিড় করে বললেন।
They opened the door, and turned to the half-smiling, half-protesting Sir Mohan.
তারা দরজাটি খুললেন, এবং অর্ধ-হাসি, অর্ধ-প্রতিবাদী স্যার মোহন এর দিকে ঘুরলেন।
"Reserved!” yelled Bill.
"সংরক্ষিত!" চিৎকার করে বিল(সৈন্যদের একজন) বললেন।
“Janta-Reserved. Army-Fauj,” exclaimed Jim, pointing to his khaki shirt.
“জনতা-সংরক্ষিত। সৈন্যবাহিনী-ফৌজ,”জিম(সৈন্যদের একজন) চিৎকার করে বললেন, তার(সৈন্যদের একজন) খাকি শার্টের দিকে ইশারা করে।
“Ek Dum jao-get out!"
"এক দম জাও-বেরিয়ে যাও!"
“I say, I say, surely," protested Sir Mohan in his Oxford accent.
"আমি বলি, আমি অবশ্যই বলি," স্যার মোহন তার অক্সফোর্ড উচ্চারণে প্রতিবাদ করেছিলেন।
The soldiers paused.
সৈন্যরা বিরতি নিলেন।
It almost sounded like English, but they knew better than to trust their inebriated ears.

The engine whistled and the guard waved his green flag.

Sir Mohan was livid with rage.

"Preposterous, preposterous," he shouted, hoarse with anger. “I'll have you arrested-guard, guard!"

Bill and Jim paused again. It did sound like English, but it was too much of the King's for them.

He reeled backwards, tripped on his bedding, and landed on the suitcase.

"Toodle-oo!"
"বিদায়!"
Sir Mohan's feet were glued to the earth and he lost his speech.

He stared at the lighted windows of the train going past him in quickening tempo.

The tail-end of the train appeared with a red light and the guard standing in the open doorway with the flags in his hands.

In the inter-class zenana compartment was Lachmi, fair and fat, on whose nose the diamond nose-ring glistened against the station lights.
আন্তঃ-শ্রেণীর জেনানা বগিতে ছিল লাচমি, ফর্সা এবং মোটা, যার নাকের উপর হীরার নাকচাবিটি স্টেশনের আলোয় চকচক করছিল।
Her mouth was bloated with betel saliva which she had been storing up to spit as soon as the train had cleared the station.
তার মূখ পানের পিক দিয়ে স্ফীত ছিল যেটি তিনি ট্রেনটি স্টেশন ছাড়লেই থুথু ফেলবেন বলে জমা করছিলেন।
As the train sped past the lighted part of the platform, Lady Lal spat and sent a jet of red dribble flying across like a dart.
যখন ট্রেনটি প্ল্যাটফর্মের আলোকিত অংশ পেরিয়ে গেল, লেডি লাল থুথু ফেললেন এবং উড়ন্ত লাল লালা ফিনকি দিয়ে জোরে ছুঁড়ে মারালেন।
