Khushwant Singh
Khushwant Singh (1915-2014) has won fame as a journalist as well as a fiction writer. With Malice towards One and All was a very popular weekly newspaper column penned by him. He was editor to the prominent newsweekly known as The Illustrated Weekly. Khushwant Singh is also well known for his poems and short stories.
'Karma' is taken from The Collected Short Stories of Khushwant Singh (2005). The story is written with a note of irony. The author shows concern with the issue of cultural identity.
খুশবন্ত সিং (১৯১৫-২০১৪) একজন সাংবাদিক এবং কথাসাহিত্যিক হিসাবে খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছেন। ‘With Malice towards One and All’ তাঁর দ্বারা লিখিত একটি খুব জনপ্রিয় সাপ্তাহিক সংবাদপত্রের কলাম ছিল। তিনি ‘The Illustrated Weekly’ নামে পরিচিত বিশিষ্ট সাপ্তাহিক সংবাদপত্রের সম্পাদক ছিলেন। খুশবন্ত সিং তাঁর কবিতা এবং ছোট গল্পের জন্যও সুপরিচিত।
‘Karma' খুশবন্ত সিং-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত গল্পের সংগ্রহ (২০০৫) থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। গল্পটি বিদ্রূপের একটি সুর দিয়ে লেখা হয়েছে। লেখক সাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয়ের বিষয়টি নিয়ে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছেন।

Sir Mohan Lal looked at himself in the mirror of a first class waiting room at the railway station.
স্যার মোহন লাল রেল স্টেশনের প্রথম শ্রেণির বিশ্রামাগারের আয়নায় নিজের দিকে তাকালেন।
The mirror was obviously made in India.
স্পষ্টতই আয়নাটি ভারতে তৈরি হয়েছিল।
The red oxide at its back had come off at several places and long lines of translucent glass cut across its surface.

Sir Mohan smiled at the mirror with an air of pity and patronage.
স্যার মোহন আয়না দেখে করুণা ও পৃষ্ঠপোষকতার বাতাবরণে হাসলেন।
“You are so very much like everything else in this country, inefficient, dirty, indifferent," he murmured.
"তুমি এই দেশের সব কিছুর মতোই অনেকখানি অদক্ষ, নোংরা, উদাসীন," তিনি অপরিস্ফুট ভাবে বললেন।
The mirror smiled back at Sir Mohan.
আয়নাও পিছনে স্যার মোহনকে দেখে হাসল।
“You are a bit of all right, old chap," it said. “Distinguished, efficient-even handsome. That neatly-trimmed moustache - the suit from Saville Row with the carnation in the buttonhole — the aroma of eau de cologne, talcum powder and scented soap all about you! Yes, old fellow, you are a bit of all right.”
N.B. ‘Savile Row’ is a street in Mayfair, central London. Known principally for its traditional bespoke tailoring for men.

“Koi Hai!” A bearer in white livery appeared through a wire gauze door.
"কেউ আছে!" সাদা পোশাকে একজন বাহক(কুলি) একটি সরু তারের জালবিশেষ দিয়ে তৈরি দরজা দিয়ে এসে উপস্থিত হল।
“Ek Chota," ordered Sir Mohan, and sank into a large cane chair to drink and ruminate.
