About the Writer and Story ::
Jameo Mercer Langoton Hughes (1902-1967) was a famous writer and social activist from America. Hughes was interested in the revival of African folk culture. Some of his well known works are the weary Blues (1926), Not without Langhter (1930), The Way of White Folks (1934).
This story is about the sympathy shown by an older woman to a young urchin, who tried to steal her pocketbook. The young boy was eager to acknowledge the lenity shown to him by her, but he got no more chance to do that beyond a brief, "Thank You".

এই গল্পটি একজন বয়স্ক মহিলার একটি তরুন রাস্তার ছেলের প্রতি দেখানো সহানুভূতি নিয়ে, যে তার পকেটবুক চুরি করার চেষ্টা করেছিল। ছোট ছেলেটি তার(মহিলাটি) দ্বারা তার(ছেলেটি) প্রতি দেখানো নমনীয়তা স্বীকার করতে আকুল ছিল, কিন্তু সংক্ষিপ্ত "ধন্যবাদ" এর বাইরে সে(ছেলেটি) আর কিছু করার সুযোগ পায়নি।
THE TEXT (Page No. 50) ::
She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but hammer and nails.
তিনি একজন লম্বাচওরা মহিলা ছিলেন সাথে ছিল একটি বড়সর টাকা রাখার থলি যার মধ্যে হাতুড়ি এবং পেরেক ছাড়া সবকিছু ছিল।
It had a long strap, and she carried it stung across her shoulder.
এটি একটি বড় মাপের পট্টি ছিল, এবং তিনি এটি তার কাঁধ আড়াআড়ি ভাবে ঝুলিয়ে বহন করতেন।
It was about eleven o'clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse.

“The strap broke with the single tug the boy gave it from behind.

But the boy's weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so, instead of taking off full blast as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back on the sidewalk, and his legs flew up.
কিন্তু ছেলেটির ওজন এবং পার্সের ওজন মিলি মিশে তার(ছেলেটির) ভারসাম্য হারিয়ে ফেলার কারণ ঘটার ফলে, জোরে লাফ দিয়ে পালাবে সে যেমনটা আশা করে্রেছিল, তার বদলে ছেলেটি ফুটপাতে তার পিঠে পড়ে চিত হয়ে পড়ে গেল এবং তার পা গুলি উপর দিকে উঠে গেল।
The large woman simply turned around and kicked him right square in his blue-jeaned sitter.
বড়সর মহিলাটি কেবল ঘুরে দাঁড়ালেন এবং তাকে তার নীল-জিন্সের নিতম্বে একদম সোজাসুজি লাথি মারলেন।
Then she reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled.
তারপর তিনি নিচে ঝুঁকলেন, ছেলেটিকে তার জামার সামনের দিকটা ধরে উপরে তুললেন, এবং তাকে ঝাঁকাতে থাকলেন যতক্ষণ পর্যন্ত তার দাঁতে দাঁতে ঠকঠকানি লেগে যায়।
After that the woman said, “Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here.

"She still held him.

But she bent down enough to permit him to stoop and pick up her purse."

Then she said, “Now ain't you ashamed of yourself?"

Firmly gripped by his shirt front, the boy said, “Yes'm."
তার জামার সামনেটা দিয়ে শক্ত ভাবে আটকা পড়া ছেলেটি বলল,"হ্যাঁ ম্যাম"।
"The woman said, "What did you want to do it for?"
"মহিলা বললেন," তুমি এটা কিসের জন্য করতে চেয়েছিলে? "
The boy said, “I didn't aim to."
ছেলেটি বলল, "আমি এটা করতে চাইনি।"
She said, "You a lie!"
তিনি বললেন, তুমি একটা মিথ্যুক!"
