About the Writer and Story ::
Jameo Mercer Langoton Hughes (1902-1967) was a famous writer and social activist from America. Hughes was interested in the revival of African folk culture. Some of his well known works are the weary Blues (1926), Not without Langhter (1930), The Way of White Folks (1934).
This story is about the sympathy shown by an older woman to a young urchin, who tried to steal her pocketbook. The young boy was eager to acknowledge the lenity shown to him by her, but he got no more chance to do that beyond a brief, "Thank You".

এই গল্পটি একজন বয়স্ক মহিলার একটি তরুন রাস্তার ছেলের প্রতি দেখানো সহানুভূতি নিয়ে, যে তার পকেটবুক চুরি করার চেষ্টা করেছিল। ছোট ছেলেটি তার(মহিলাটি) দ্বারা তার(ছেলেটি) প্রতি দেখানো নমনীয়তা স্বীকার করতে আকুল ছিল, কিন্তু সংক্ষিপ্ত "ধন্যবাদ" এর বাইরে সে(ছেলেটি) আর কিছু করার সুযোগ পায়নি।
THE TEXT (Page No. 52) ::
"Roger," answered the boy.
"রজার," উত্তর দিল ছেলেটি।
"Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman, whereupon she turned him loose-at last.
"তারপর, রজার, তুমি ওই বেসিনে যাও এবং তোমার মুখ ধুয়ে নাও," ভদ্রমহিলা বললেন, তারপর তিনি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলেন অবশেষে।
Roger looked at the door-looked at the woman-looked at the door and went to the sink.
রজার দরজার দিকে তাকাল-ভদ্রমহিলার দিকে তাকাল-দরজার দিকে তাকাল-এবং বেসিনের দিকে চলে গেল।
“Let the water run until it gets warm," she said.
"জল উষ্ণ না হওয়া পর্যন্ত ছেড়ে রাখো," তিনি বলেছিলেন।
“Here's a clean towel.”
"এই নাও একটি পরিষ্কার তোয়ালে।"
"You gonna take me to jail?" asked the boy, bending over the sink.
"আপনি আমাকে জেলে নিয়ে যাবেন?" জিজ্ঞেস করল ছেলেটি, বেসিনের উপর ঝুঁকে পড়ে।
"Not with that face, I would not take you nowhere," said the woman.
"ও রকম মুখ দিয়ে নয়, আমি তোমাকে কোথাও নিয়ে যাব না," ভদ্রমহিলা বললেন।
"Here I am trying to get home to cook me a bite to eat and you snatch my pocketbook!
"এখানে আমি চেষ্টা করছি বাড়িতে ফেরার জন্য কিছু একটা রেঁধে খাব বলে আর তুমি এসেছিলে আমার পকেটবুক কাড়তে!
May be, you ain't been to your supper either, late as it be.
হয়তো, তোমারও রাতের খাবার হয়নি , বেশ রাত হয়েছে।
Have you?"
খেয়েছ কি?"
"There's nobody home at my house," said the boy.
"আমার বাড়িতে কেউ নেই," বলল ছেলেটি ।
"Then we'll eat," said the woman, "I believe you're hungry-or been hungry-to try to snatch my pocketbook."
"তাহলে আমরা খাব," ভদ্রমহিলা বললেন, "আমি বিশ্বাস করি তুমি ক্ষুধার্ত-অথবা ক্ষুধার্ত ছিলে-যার জন্য আমার পকেটবুক(টাকার ব্যাগ) -টা ছিনতাই করার চেষ্টা করেছিলে।"
"I wanted a pair of blue suede shoes," said the boy.
"আমি এক জোড়া নীল সুয়েড জুতা চেয়েছিলাম", বলল ছেলেটি।
"Well, you didn't have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes," said Mrs. Luella Bates Washington jones.
"আচ্ছা, সুয়েড জুতা পাওয়ার জন্য তোমাকে আমার পকেটবুক ছিনতাই করার দরকার ছিল না," বললেন মিসেস লুয়েলা বেটস ওয়াশিংটন জোনস।
“You could of asked me."
"তুমি আমার কাছে চাইলেই পারতে?
"Ma'am?"
"ম্যাডাম?"
The water dripping from his face, the boy looked at her.
তার মুখ থেকে জল টপ টপ করে পড়ছে, তার দিকে তাকালো ছেলেটি ।
There was a long pause.
সেটা ছিল এক দীর্ঘ বিরতি।
A very long pause.
অনেক লম্বা বিরতি।
After he had dried his face and not knowing what else to do dried it again, the boy turned around, wondering what next.
তার মুখ মোছার পর কি করবে বুঝতে না পেরে আবারও মুখ মুছল, ছেলেটি ঘুরে দাঁড়াল, ভাবছিল এর পরে কি হবে।
The door was open.
দরজা খোলা ছিল।
He could make a dash for it down the hall.
সেটার দিকে হলঘর দিয়ে বেগে ছুটে যেতে পারত।
He could run, run, run, run, run!
সে দৌড়াতে পারতো, দৌড়, দৌড়, দৌড়!
The woman was sitting on the day-bed.
ভদ্রমহিলা দিনের জন্য ব্যবহৃত বিছানায় বসে ছিলেন।
After a while she said, "I were young once and I wanted things I could not get."
কিছুক্ষণ পর তিনি বললেন, "আমারও বয়স একসময় কম ছিল এবং এমন অনেক জিনিস আমি চাইতাম যা আমি পেতাম না।"
There was another long pause.
আরেকটি দীর্ঘ বিরতি।
The boy's mouth opened.
ছেলেটির মুখ খুলে গেল।
Then he frowned, but not knowing he frowned.
তারপর সে ভ্রু কুঁচকাল, কিন্তু এটা না জেনেই সে ভ্রূকুটি করেছিল।
The woman said, “Um-hum! You thought I was going to say but, didn't you?
ভদ্রমহিলা বললেন, “হুম-উম! তুমি ভেবেছিলে আমি বলতে যাচ্ছিলাম কিন্তু, তাই না?
You thought I was going to say, but I didn't snatch people's pocketbooks.
তুমি ভেবেছিলে আমি বলতে যাচ্ছিলাম, কিন্তু, আমি লোকের পকেটবুক(টাকার ব্যাগ) ছিনতাই করি নি।
Well, I wasn't going to say that."
ব্যাপারটা হল, আমি সেটা বলতে যাচ্ছিলাম না।
Pause.
"থামো।
Silence.
নীরবতা।
"I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son-neither tell God, if he didn't already know.

So you set down while I fix us something to eat.

You might run that comb through your hair so you will look presentable."
ঐ চিরনিটা দিয়ে চুলটা আঁচরে নিতে পারো, যাতে তোমাকে ভদ্রস্থ দেখায়।"
