Leela's Friend
R. K. Narayan
Rasipuram Krishnaswami lyer Narayanswami (1906-2001) is one of the most widely read Indian writers in English. His famous works include Swami and Friends(1935), The English Teacher (1945), The Guide (1958). Apart from novels, Narayan displayed versatility as an author in his essays, short stories, memoirs and travel books.
Leela's Friend is taken from R.K. Narayan's popular short story collection The Malgudi Days. The story explores the issues of the interaction between different social classes, friendship and trust, prejudice and exploitation.
রাসিপুরম কৃষ্ণস্বামী আইয়ার নারায়ণস্বামী (১৯০৬-২০০১) ইংরেজিতে সর্বাধিক পঠিত ভারতীয় লেখকদের একজন। তাঁর বিখ্যাত রচনাগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে 'স্বামী এন্ড ফ্রেন্ডস' (১৯৩৫), 'দ্য ইংলিশ টিচার' (১৯৪৫), 'দ্য গাইড '(১৯৫৮)। উপন্যাসগুলি ছাড়াও নারায়ণ তাঁর প্রবন্ধ, ছোট গল্প, স্মৃতিচারণ ও ভ্রমণ বইয়ে লেখক হিসাবে বৈচিত্র্য প্রদর্শন করেছিলেন।
‘লিলাজ ফ্রেন্ড’ বা ‘লিলার বন্ধু’ আর. কে. নারায়ণের জনপ্রিয় ছোট গল্পের সংকলন ‘দ্য মালগুডি ডেজ’ থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। গল্পটি বিভিন্ন সামাজিক শ্রেণি, বন্ধুত্ব এবং বিশ্বাস, কুসংস্কার এবং শোষণের মধ্যে পারস্পরিক ক্রিয়া-প্রতিক্রিয়া -এর বিষয়গুলি অনুসন্ধান করে।

“Now come with me," he said, and took her to the backyard.

He stopped near the well and pointed up.
তিনি কূপের কাছে এসে থামলেন এবং ইশারা করলেন।
The moon was there, too.
চাঁদও সেখানে ছিল।
Leela clapped her hands and screamed in wonder, “'The moon here! It was there! How is it?"
লীলা হাততালি দিল এবং আশ্চর্য হয়ে চেঁচিয়ে উঠল, ''এখানে চাঁদ! এটা তো সেখানে ছিল! এটা কেমন করে?"
"I have asked it to follow us about."
"আমি এটিকে(চাঁদ) আমাদের অনুসরণ করতে বলেছি।"
Leela ran in and told her mother, "Sidda knows the moon."
লীলা দৌড়ে গেল এবং তার মাকে বলল, "সিদ্ধা চাঁদকে জানে।"
At dusk he carried her in and she held a class for him.
সন্ধ্যার সময় তিনি তাকে নিয়ে ভিতরে গেলেন এবং সে (লীলা) তার জন্য একটি ক্লাস অনুষ্ঠিত করে।
She had a box filled with catalogues, illustrated books and stumps of pencils.
তার ক্যাটালগস, সচিত্র বই এবং পেন্সিলের স্টাম্পে ভরা একটি বাক্স ছিল।
It gave her great joy to play the teacher to Sidda.
সিদ্দার শিক্ষকের চরিত্রে অভিনয় তাকে(লীলা) দুর্দান্ত আনন্দ দিয়েছিল।
She made him squat on the floor with a pencil between his fingers and a catalogue in front of him.
সে(লীলা) তাকে(সিদ্দা) তার(সিদ্দা) আঙ্গুলের মধ্যে একটি পেন্সিল দিয়ে এবং তার (সিদ্দা) সামনে একটি ক্যাটালগ দিয়ে মেঝেতে স্কোয়াট(উবু করে রাখা) বানিয়েছিল।
She had another pencil and a catalogue and commanded, “Now write."
তার(লীলা) কাছে অন্য একটি পেন্সিল এবং একটি ক্যাটালগ ছিল এবং আদেশ করেছিল, "এখন লেখ"।
And he had to try and copy whatever she wrote in the pages of her catalogue.

She knew two or three letters of the alphabet and could draw a kind of cat and crow.

She said, examining his effort “Is this how I have drawn the crow? Is this how I have drawn the B?”
সে তার(সিদ্দা) প্রচেষ্টা পরীক্ষা করে বলত, “আমি কি এইভাবেই কাকটা এঁকেছি? আমি কি এইভাবে B কে এঁকেছি?"
She pitied him, and redoubled her efforts to teach him.
সে তাকে দয়া দেখাত, এবং তাকে শেখানোর প্রচেষ্টা দ্বিগুণ করত।
But that good fellow, though an adept at controlling the moon, was utterly incapable of plying the pencil.
তবে সে-ই ভাল সহকর্মী, যদিও চাঁদকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারদর্শী, পেনসিলটি চালিত করতে একেবারেই অক্ষম।
Consequently, it looked as though Leela would keep him there, pinned to his seat till his stiff, inflexible wrist cracked.

Leela would drop the pencil and run out of the room, and the school hour would end.
লীলা পেন্সিল রেখে দিত এবং ঘর থেকে দৌড়ে বাইরে বেরিয়ে যেত, আর স্কুলের সময় শেষ হত।
After dinner Leela ran to her bed.
রাতের খাবারের পরে লীলা তার বিছানার দিকে ছুটে যেত।
Sidda had to be ready with a story.
সিদ্দাকে একটা গল্প নিয়ে প্রস্তুত থাকতে হত।
He sat down on the floor near the bed and told incomparable stories of animals in the jungle, of gods in heaven, of magicians who could conjure up golden castles and fill them with little princesses and their pets ....
তিনি বিছানার কাছে মেঝেতে বসে পড়তেন এবং জঙ্গলের প্রাণী, স্বর্গের দেবদেবীদের, যাদুকরদের অতুলনীয় গল্প শোনাতেন যারা জাদুবলে সোনার দুর্গগুলি আবির্ভাব ঘটাতে পারতেন এবং ছোট ছোট রাজকন্যা এবং তাদের পোষা প্রাণী দিয়ে তাদের ভরাতে পারতেন।
Day by day she clung closer to him.
দিনের পর দিন সে তার(সিদ্দা) আরও কাছে গিয়েছিল।
She insisted upon having his company all her waking hours.
সে তার জেগে থাকার সমস্ত সময় তার(সিদ্দা) অনুষঙ্গ পাওয়ার জন্য জোর করছিল।
She was at his side when he was working in the garden or chopping wood, and accompanied him when he was sent on errands.
তিনি যখন বাগানে কাজ করছিলেন বা কাঠ কাটছিলেন তখন সে তাঁর পাশে ছিল এবং যখন তাকে(সিদ্দা) অন্যথায় প্রেরণ করা হয়েছিল তখনও তাঁর সাথে ছিল।
One evening he went out to buy sugar and Leela went with him.
এক সন্ধ্যায় তিনি চিনি কিনতে বাইরে গেলেন এবং লীলা তাঁর সাথে গেল।
When they came home, Leela's mother noticed that a gold chain Leela had been wearing was missing.
যখন তারা বাড়িতে এল, লীলার মা লক্ষ্য করলেন যে লীলা যে সোনার মালাটি পরেছিল সেটি অনুপস্থিত ছিল।
“Where is your chain?" Leela looked into her shirt, searched and said, “I don't know.” Her mother gave her a slap and said, “How many times have I told you to take it off and put it in the box?"
"তোমার মালাটি কোথায়?" লীলা তার জামার দিকে তাকাল, খোঁজাখুঁজি করে বলল, "আমি জানি না।" তার মা তাকে একটি চড় মারলেন এবং বললেন, "আমি তোমাকে কতবার বলেছিলাম তা খুলে ফেল এবং তা বাক্সে রাখ?"
