R. K. Narayan
Rasipuram Krishnaswami lyer Narayanswami (1906-2001) is one of the most widely read Indian writers in English. His famous works include Swami and Friends(1935), The English Teacher (1945), The Guide (1958). Apart from novels, Narayan displayed versatility as an author in his essays, short stories, memoirs and travel books.
Leela's Friend is taken from R.K. Narayan's popular short story collection The Malgudi Days. The story explores the issues of the interaction between different social classes, friendship and trust, prejudice and exploitation.
রাসিপুরম কৃষ্ণস্বামী আইয়ার নারায়ণস্বামী (১৯০৬-২০০১) ইংরেজিতে সর্বাধিক পঠিত ভারতীয় লেখকদের একজন। তাঁর বিখ্যাত রচনাগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে 'স্বামী এন্ড ফ্রেন্ডস' (১৯৩৫), 'দ্য ইংলিশ টিচার' (১৯৪৫), 'দ্য গাইড '(১৯৫৮)। উপন্যাসগুলি ছাড়াও নারায়ণ তাঁর প্রবন্ধ, ছোট গল্প, স্মৃতিচারণ ও ভ্রমণ বইয়ে লেখক হিসাবে বৈচিত্র্য প্রদর্শন করেছিলেন।

"Sidda! Sidda!” she shouted a moment later.
"সিদ্ধা! সিদ্দা!" সে এক মুহুর্ত পরে চিৎকার করল।
As Sidda came in, Leela's mother threw a glance at him and thought the fellow already looked queer.
সিদ্ধার ভিতরে আসার সাথে সাথে লীলার মা তার(সিদ্দা) দিকে এক নজর তাকালেন এবং ভাবলেন লোকটি(সিদ্দা) ইতিমধ্যেই অস্বাভাবিক দেখাচ্ছিল।
She asked him about the chain.
তিনি মালাটি সম্পর্কে তাকে(সিদ্দা) জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
His throat went dry.
তার(সিদ্দা) গলা শুকিয়ে গিয়েছিল।
He blinked and answered that he did not know.
তিনি(সিদ্দা) চোখ পিট্ পিট্ করে উত্তর দিলেন যে তিনি জানেন না।
She mentioned the police and shouted at him.
তিনি(লীলার মা) পুলিশ এর কথা উল্লেখ করলেন এবং তাঁর(সিদ্দা) দিকে চিৎকার করলেন।
She had to go back into the kitchen for a moment because she had left something in the oven.
চুলায় কিছু রেখেছিলেন বলে তাকে(লীলার মা) কিছুক্ষণের জন্য রান্নাঘরে ফিরে যেতে হয়েছিল।
Leela followed her, whining "Give me some sugar, Mother, I am hungry."
লীলা ঘেনঘেন করতে করতে তার(লীলার মা) পিছু পিছু গেল "আমাকে কিছুটা চিনি দাও মা, আমি ক্ষুধার্ত"।
When they came out again and called, "Sidda, Sidda!" there was no answer.
তারা((লীলা এবং লীলার মা) যখন আবার বাইরে এসে ডাকলেন, "সিদ্ধা, সিদ্ধা!" কোন উত্তর ছিল না।
Sidda had vanished into the night.
সিদ্ধা রাতে নিখোঁজ হয়ে গেলেন।
Mr. Sivasanker came home an hour later, grew very excited over all this, went to the police station and lodged a complaint.
মিঃ শিবসঙ্কর এক ঘন্টা পরে বাড়িতে এসেছিলেন, এই সমস্ত নিয়ে খুব উত্তেজিত হয়েছিলেন, থানায় গিয়েছিলেন এবং একটি অভিযোগ দায়ের করেছিলেন।
After her meal Leela refused to go to bed. “I won't sleep unless Sidda comes and tells me stories. I don't like you, Mother. You are always abusing and worrying Sidda. Why are you so rough?"

“But he has taken away your chain .... "
"তবে সে তোমার মালা কেড়ে নিয়ে চলে গেছে ...."
“Let him. It doesn't matter. Tell me a story."
"তাকে যেতে দাও. এটা কোন ব্যাপার নয়। আমাকে একটা গল্প শোনাও."
"Sleep, sleep," said Mother, attempting to make her lie down on her lap.
"ঘুমোও, ঘুমোও"মা বললেন, মা তাকে কোলে শুইয়ে দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করছিলেন।
"Tell me a story, Mother,” Leela said.
"আমাকে একটা গল্প বল মা," লীলা বলল।
It was utterly impossible for her mother to think of a story now.
তার মায়ের পক্ষে এই মুহূর্তে কোনও গল্প ভাবা একেবারেই অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়েছিল।
Her mind was disturbed.
তার(লীলার মা) মন খারাপ ছিল।
The thought of Sidda made her panicky.
সিদ্ধার ভাবনা তাকে আতঙ্কিত করে তুলেছিল।
The fellow, with his knowledge of the household, might come in at night and loot.
লোকটি(সিদ্দা), তার(লীলার মা) পরিবারের সবকিছু নিয়ে জ্ঞাত, রাতে এসে লুটপাট করতে পারে।
She shuddered to think what a villain she had been harbouring all these days.
তিনি(লীলার মা) ভেবেই কেঁপে উঠলেন এতদিন তিনি তবে কি একজন পাজী লোককে আশ্রয় দিয়েছিলেন।
It was God's mercy that he hadn't killed the child for the chain.
এটি ঈশ্বরের করুণা ছিল যে তিনি(সিদ্দা) মালাটির জন্য শিশুটিকে হত্যা করেন নি।
"Sleep, Leela, sleep," she cajoled.
"ঘুমাও, লীলা, ঘুমোও" তিনি ভুলাতে লাগলেন।
"Can't you tell the story of the elephant?" Leela asked.
"তুমি কি হাতির গল্প বলতে পারো না?" লীলা জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
"No."
"না"
Leela made a noise of deprecation and asked, “Why should not Sidda sit in our chair, Mother?"
লীলা প্রবল ভাবে অসম্মতি সুচক শব্দ করল এবং জিজ্ঞাসা করল, "সিদ্দার কেন আমাদের চেয়ারে বসা উচিৎ নয়, মা?"
Mother didn't answer the question.
মা প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিলেন না।
Leela said a moment later, “Sidda is gone because he wouldn't be allowed to sleep inside the house just as we do. Why should he always be made to sleep outside the house, Mother? I think he is angry with us, Mother."
লীলা এক মুহুর্ত পরে বলল, “সিদ্ধা চলে গেছে কারণ আমাদের মতো ঘরে তাকে ঘুমানোর অনুমতি দেওয়া হবে না। কেন তাকে সর্বদা ঘরের বাইরে ঘুমাতে হবে, মা? আমার মনে হয় তিনি(সিদ্দা) আমাদের প্রতি রাগ করেছেন, মা।"
By the time Sivasanker returned, Leela had fallen asleep.
