Leela's Friend
R. K. Narayan
Rasipuram Krishnaswami lyer Narayanswami (1906-2001) is one of the most widely read Indian writers in English. His famous works include Swami and Friends(1935), The English Teacher (1945), The Guide (1958). Apart from novels, Narayan displayed versatility as an author in his essays, short stories, memoirs and travel books.
Leela's Friend is taken from R.K. Narayan's popular short story collection The Malgudi Days. The story explores the issues of the interaction between different social classes, friendship and trust, prejudice and exploitation.
রাসিপুরম কৃষ্ণস্বামী আইয়ার নারায়ণস্বামী (১৯০৬-২০০১) ইংরেজিতে সর্বাধিক পঠিত ভারতীয় লেখকদের একজন। তাঁর বিখ্যাত রচনাগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে 'স্বামী এন্ড ফ্রেন্ডস' (১৯৩৫), 'দ্য ইংলিশ টিচার' (১৯৪৫), 'দ্য গাইড '(১৯৫৮)। উপন্যাসগুলি ছাড়াও নারায়ণ তাঁর প্রবন্ধ, ছোট গল্প, স্মৃতিচারণ ও ভ্রমণ বইয়ে লেখক হিসাবে বৈচিত্র্য প্রদর্শন করেছিলেন।
‘লিলাজ ফ্রেন্ড’ বা ‘লিলার বন্ধু’ আর. কে. নারায়ণের জনপ্রিয় ছোট গল্পের সংকলন ‘দ্য মালগুডি ডেজ’ থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। গল্পটি বিভিন্ন সামাজিক শ্রেণি, বন্ধুত্ব এবং বিশ্বাস, কুসংস্কার এবং শোষণের মধ্যে পারস্পরিক ক্রিয়া-প্রতিক্রিয়া -এর বিষয়গুলি অনুসন্ধান করে।

He said, “What a risk we took in engaging that fellow. It seems he is an old criminal. He has been in jail half a dozen times for stealing jewellery from children. From the description I gave, the inspector was able to identify him in a moment."
তিনি(শিভসঙ্কর) বলেছিলেন, “আমরা কী না ঝুঁকি নিয়েছিলাম লোকটিকে নিযুক্ত করে। দেখে মনে হচ্ছে তিনি একজন পুরানো অপরাধী। বাচ্চাদের কাছ থেকে গহনা চুরির অভিযোগে তিনি আধা ডজনবার কারাগারে রয়েছেন। আমি যে বর্ণনা দিয়েছি তা থেকে পুলিসের দারোগা তাকে মুহুর্তে সনাক্ত করতে সক্ষম হন।"
"Where is he now?" asked the wife.
"এখন তিনি কোথায়?" স্ত্রী জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
"The police know his haunts. They will pick him up very soon, don't worry. The inspector was furious that I didn't consult him before employing him ...."
"পুলিশ তার আস্তানাগুলি জানে। তারা খুব শিগগিরই তাকে তুলে নেবে, দুশ্চিন্তা করো না। পুলিসের দারোগা খুব রেগে গিয়েছিলেন যে আমি তাকে নিয়োগ দেওয়ার আগে তার সাথে পরামর্শ করিনি ..."
Four days later, just as Father was coming home from the office, a police inspector and a constable brought in Sidda.
চার দিন পরে, বাবা যখন অফিস থেকে বাড়ি আসছিলেন, ঠিক তখনই একজন পুলিশ ইন্সপেক্টর এবং একজন কনস্টেবল সিদ্দাকে নিয়ে এসেছিল।
Sidda stood with bowed head.
সিদ্ধ মাথা নিচু করে দাঁড়িয়ে রইলেন।
Leela was overjoyed. “Sidda! Sidda!" she cried, and ran down the steps to meet him.
লীলা খুব খুশী হল। “সিদ্দা! সিদ্দা! "সে চিৎকার করে উঠল এবং তার সাথে দেখা করতে নিছে নেমে গেল।
"Don't go near him," the inspector said, stopping her.
"তার কাছে যাবে না," ইন্সপেক্টর তাকে(লীলা) থামিয়ে বললেন।
“Why not?"
"কেন না?"
"He is a thief. He has taken away your gold chain.”
"সে(সিদ্দা) হয় একজন চোর। সে তোমার সোনার মালা কেড়ে নিয়েছে।"
"Let him. I will have a new chain,” Leela said, and all of them laughed.
"ওকে দিয়ে দাও। আমার একটা নতুন মালা থাকবে," লীলা বলল, আর সবাই হেসে ফেলল।
And then Mr Sivasanker spoke to Sidda; and then his wife addressed him with a few words on his treachery.
এবং তখন মিঃ শিভসঙ্কর সিদ্ধার সাথে কথা বলেছিলেন; এবং তারপরে তাঁর স্ত্রী তাকে (সিদ্দা) বিশ্বাসঘাতকতার বিষয়ে কয়েকটি কথা দিয়ে সম্বোধন করলেন।
They then asked him where he had put the chain.
তারা তখন তাকে(সিদ্দা) জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন সে মালাটি কোথায় রেখেছে?
"I have not taken it,” Sidda said feebly, looking at the ground. "Why did you run away without telling us?" asked Leela's mother.
"আমি এটা নিইনি," মাটির দিকে তাকিয়ে সিদ্দা ক্ষীণ ভাবে বললেন। "তুমি আমাদের না বলে কেন পালিয়ে গেলে?" লীলার মা জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
There was no answer.
কোন উত্তর ছিল না।
Leela's face became red. “Oh, policemen, leave him alone. I want to play with him."
লীলার মুখটা লাল হয়ে গেল। “ওহ, পুলিশ, ওকে(সিদ্দা) একা ছেড়ে দাও। আমি তার সাথে খেলতে চাই। "
“My dear child," said the police inspector, “he is a thief."
"আমার প্রিয় শিশু," পুলিশ দারোগা বলেছিলেন, "সে(সিদ্দা) হয় একজন চোর" "
"Let him be," Leela replied haughtily.
"তাকে(সিদ্দা) তার মত থাকতে দিন," লীলা অহঙ্কার করে জবাব দিল।
“What a devil you must be to steal a thing from such an innocent child!" remarked the inspector.
"তুমি(সিদ্দা) কত বড় একজন শয়তান এইরকম একজন নির্দোষ শিশুর কাছ থেকে কোনও জিনিস চুরি কর!" পুলিশ দারোগা মন্তব্য করলেন।
“Even now it is not too late. Return it. I will let you go provided you promise not to do such a thing again.”
“এমনকি এখনও খুব বেশি দেরি হয় নি। এটা(মালা) ফিরিয়ে দাও। তুমি যদি আবারও এমন কাজ না করার শপথ কর তবে আমি(দারগা) তোমাকে(সিদ্দা) ছেড়ে দেব।”
Leela's father and mother, too, joined in this appeal.
লীলার বাবা এবং মা ও এই আবেদনটিতে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন।
Leela felt disgusted with the whole business and said, “Leave him alone, he hasn't taken the chain."
লীলার পুরো ব্যস্ততাটাই বিরক্ত লাগল এবং বলল, "ওকে(সিদ্দা) একা ছেড়ে দাও, সে মালা নেয় নি।"
"You are not at all a reliable prosecution witness, my child," observed the inspector humorously.
"তুমি মোটেও মামলার পক্ষে কোনও নির্ভরযোগ্য সাক্ষী নও, আমার বাছা," দারগা হাস্যকরভাবে পর্যবেক্ষণ করলেন।
"No, he hasn't taken it!" Leela screamed. Her father said, “Baby, if you don't behave, I will be very angry with you."
"না, সে(সিদ্দা) এটা নেয় নি!" লীলা চিৎকার করে উঠল। তার বাবা বলেছিলেন, "বাবু, তুমি যদি ঠিক আচরণ না কর, তবে আমি তোমার উপর খুব রেগে যাব।"
