About the Writer and Story ::
William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), popularly known as O. Henry, was a noted short story writer from the United States of America. His famous short story collections include Cabbages and Kings (1904), The Trimmed Lamp (1910) and The Gentle Grafter (1919).
The story is marked by humour and sentimentality. The surprise at the end is a typifying characteristic of O. Henry's short stories. This short story has been taken from the collection Roads of Destiny (1909).

A guard came to the prison shoe-shop, where Jimmy Valentine was assiduously stitching uppers, and escorted him to the front office.
একজন প্রহরী কারাগারের জুতো-দোকানে এসেছিলেন, যেখানে জিমি ভ্যালেন্টাইন যত্ন সহকারে উপরের অংশ (জুতার) গুলি সেলাই করছিল, এবং তাকে সামনের অফিসে সঙ্গে করে নিয়ে গিয়েছিল।
There the warden handed Jimmy his pardon, which had been signed that morning by the governor.
